Go into task manager again and click the processes tab. Then click on the 'CPU' column twice which will list the programs which are using most of the processor.

Find out what is eating up your CPU.

If you only got msn and firefox open:

I bet its msn stuck in a loop.

Kill the process and update to latest version, this bug happened to loads of people i know.

Anyway go to process tab of task manager and look at msn in the cpu column. To be sure.

Also 79 processes seems a lot to me. I only have about 60 when booting into vista. If you are running vista sp1 check out this link.
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/registry.htm

If you want download the "Safe" Windows Vista SP1 Services Start Key which corresponds to your vista type (home, business, 32bit etc.) Run the reg file and it will change your registry so that only the necessarily vista services will run on start up. Don't worry it wont change any antivirus etc. that you installed. Worked well on my system but If you don't like it there is a 'Default' file also.

While I agree that 79 for "doing nothing is high" I wouldn't recommend a registry entry change - especially as you can't roll back (unless you back up the registry....)

If you want to reduce the amount of start up problems, download CCleaner - and under "programmes" "auto start" deactivate - but don't delete programmes step by step, things like auto updaters, quicktime etc. if you are unsure about an entry, leave it on, also leave your anti virus on.

Well from my understanding the blackviperguide reg file only changes some processes which were initially set to run after installing vista and I have used this method a few times without a problem. Of course I can understand how editing the registry can be a bad idea if someone doesn't know exactly what they are doing which is why I tried the 'safe' file and found it helpful. There is a manual section also listing everything.

Also good point about CCleaner and going to Tools/Startup is a great way of stopping those processes that run at startup which were installed by the user. Im not a fan of having the any updaters (quicktime, jave etc.) running in the background when starting windows.
