I'm wondering what and how I can get rid of some of the processes that are running on my system. There seem to be multiple instance of the same thing(svchost like 5 times)! Should I keep those on? What can I remove//how do I do it? My computer is going pretty slow, just looking for some ways to speed it up. Any thoughts?

Svhost normally runs on 4-5 instances...

There are many guides on shutting off non essential system process, try google.

Also, if your not sure about a process, put the name of the process in google, and you will soon know what it is.

read the notebook optimizing guide on notebookreview.com. Those of us who have used it have noticed a huge decrease in processes and everything seems fast/smoother.

You could go ahead and stop a lot of the programs from starting up when Windows starts up.

What I mean is everytime you start Windows a lot of programs (like your anti-virus) will start up (and most often will have an icon in the taskbar). There are a lot of programs that start up with your computer, and I'm willing to bet you don't know about half of them (and really don't need them to start).

    To prevent programs from starting:
    Click on the Start Menu.
    Click on Run.
Type in msconfig and hit Enter.
Click on the Startup tab (at the top).

There you have a list of all the programs and things that start up with Windows.
To check what each one does I recommend using this website:
    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=
(Simply type in the name of each one and the website will tell you what each one does and if it's needed).

You only really need your Anti-Virus to load up on startup. But you can keep some other things if you want (like I have SetPoint left on so I can use all the buttons on my wireless mouse).

This should speed up your computer (mainly when it starts up).

I hope this helps a little.
