I been Hibernating instead of doing a complete shutdown. My info Gadgets says my uptime is 14 days. I'm pretty sure I'll end up restarting sooner or later from a windows update or program install.

Who else hibernating instead of doing a shut down.

I just put mine into standbye at night and it's set to automatically hibernate after 3hrs.
I restart every week or sooner if the laptop crashes.

Didn't know you can auto hibernate while PC is in stand-by mode. I give that a try to, but would set it to hibernate after like 20min to save batt life.

I've taken to hibernating as well. It's just a little bit quicker. So far the longest uptime I've had is 10 days and 9 days. However, that includes the time during which the computer was in hibernation - so if you put it in hibernation after checking email before leaving for vacation you might have an "uptime" of 14 days but it was only actually on for twenty minutes. The CPU Time of System Idle Process in Task Manager is a good way to guesstimate actual uptime, although of course CPU use impacts that.

I disabled Standby on my system to avoid accidentally draining the battery with it - handy little tool called MCE Standby Tool which also allows disabling hibernation. The computer already resumes pretty quick from hibernation.

Yea that's why I like Hibernating. Start up time is about about the same as a full shutdown, but once you you hit the desktop everything is ready to go instead of having to wait for apps to load up. And that's a huge plus for me.

I usually only need to restart once a month, only for Windows Updates.

I've been disabling hibernation on my XP machines for over two years now. They stay on during the day, occasionally getting put into standby, but they get shutdown every night.

So basically my computer is never on for more than 12 hours.

I myself would always disable Hibernation myself because it just never worked properly on all my previous machines I had. Always some type of error when trying to Hibernate or when trying to boot from Hibernate. But now it works very well on my new 4GB Vista 64bit Laptop.

Since I demand the best performance from my system and my games I need to have the system reboot periodically to ensure best performance.

My longest uptime was close to 4 months(114 days to be exact).
However an occasional restart is good...

I don't use hibernate at all. I've had too many issues with the Vaio not wanting to wake up properly. It gets shut down every day (it's always gonna be a slow machine). The Acer is always on because it's always doing something (currently spending it's nights capturing video from VHS tapes that I need to edit) but it reboots itself once a day as soon as the virus program updates itself. No issues there.

Doesn't hibernating use up lots of hard disk space?

It'll use the same amount of space as you have RAM.

I only use hibernate if my UPS kicks to battery power. Otherwise it is on 24/7.

I don't use hibernate, but I do use Standby. I never shut down my computers unless it forces me to.

I do that with my PC tower mainly for remote use, small server, etc. Only shut it down to clean out the inside of dusk or to repair/upgrade.

But I can't see myself leaving my Laptop on 24/7, for some reason I'm just paranoid about that. Don't ask why.

Yes, you can configure your power settings to hibernate after a certain amount of time, even if the computer is in sleep mode. I have different settings for battery and A/C modes, but both go into hibernation after about 30-45 minutes of sleep.

That surprises me sometimes. My computer will be in standby mode and spontaneously turn on and then turn off.

That sounds like an application configured to check for updates. You might want to check your different application update settings. Also, have you reviewed your power settings to make sure your sleep/hibernate settings are correct?

lol, there's no problem. It goes into standby after 15 minutes, and after 1 hour, it wakes up from standby and hibernates.
