This happens ever time I update Windows, everything goes wonky. I loses all my passwords and stuff get jumbled around.
Anyway, I can't get hibernate to engage. My computer begins the hibernate cycle then flashes and comes back to restart. Because of the flash I suspect that something is blocking it but for the life of me I don't know what. Any ideas?

How much space do you have left on your HDD?
Hibernate ceased to function properly for me since my HDD was overfull.
-
It says 18GB free. Isn't that sufficient?
-
I would believe so...
Does your computer reboot or just jump back to the login screen?
Question: Does sleep function correctly? -
18GB free may not be enough. Most people say leave 20% free. You have 500GB disk so you should have 100 GB free. Get a external hard drive and unload 100GB of stuff onto it. Then test hibernate again.
-
It jumps back to login.Sleep functions normally but my battery are too old and they can't take the strain. I log in and out once a day and hibernate in between.Hmm, I don't think I remember it ever having that much more but you may be on to something. Anyway, adding more is worth try. BTW, that 18GB is the amount free of the 165 GB C drive partition.

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be the touchpad drivers not allowing the system to enter hibernate. Returned to the original synaptics drivers and now just keep stopping Windows update from installing new synaptics drivers.
-
I added another 10GB and no effect. It was working before with 20GB free.
-
Did you update any hardware driver?
-
Just the Windows update.
EDIT: It fixed itself?
Must be those devilish Cornish Pixies again
-
Glad to hear the issue has been resolved.. (Until the next update?) :/
Best of luck. -
Its not a major inconvenience but it can be a nuisance since I also have to reestablish many of my saved log in codes. I really was hoping someone could help me figure this thing out this time.
Its like that annoying rattle in your car that never seems to occur when the mechanic does a ride along. Oh well, until the next update then. -
Is it possible that the Windows Update messes with hibernation behind the scenes?
Just had a hunch that maybe with these updates it disables hibernate until your computer is rebooted a couple of times.
The next time this problem comes up (I hope it doesn't), double check if hibernate is present in your power settings, start menu, and the shut down dialog.
Enable/Disable Hibernate
