I run Windows 7 64bit on a Sony Vaio AW (clean install), everything works fine, no driver conflicts or stability issues. My problem is, whenever I plug in my external WD Elements 1TB USB drive, and the machine goes into hibernation, it will not wake up properly.
The Windows splash screen shows, but nothing happens, not sure if its frozen or just hangs since it happens before the Windows logo "flys in". The only thing I can do then is force a power-off by holding the powerbutton for some time, and reboot. Without the external drive this doesn't happen.
Any ideas of what could be causing this? I googled a lot, and the only thing I found was to disable the USB legacy option in the BIOS, but it turns out this Sony restricted BIOS of my machine does not have that option.

Check in C:\Windows and look for MEMORY.dmp or mini something.dmp or some sore of dump file. Even though you didn't get a blue screen, it may still have generated a crash dump file. You can use a program called BlueScreenView to view the crash dump and see what the error is. Without this error, it will be very difficult for anyone to help you figure out what's going on.

unfortunately there is no such file. it appears as if the computer just stops, not crashs.

If you have a look in event viewer, it may give some clue in there, or at least somewhere to start to try and pinpoint the issue.

Check the Sony site - I have a FW - had same issue. Check under the original shipped OS for a USB Registry Patch that was issued to resolve hibernation issues.
