Its been a while since I last put my laptop on hibernation, but recently when I did so, I get a windows error recovery on boot, as if my laptop didn't shut down properly, and all of my work that was supposed to be saved was lost.

I tried to replicate the issue, and found out that it only happens when I hibernate my laptop on battery. I made sure that the hibernate goes through (waiting for the lights to go off) before I shut the lid, and that my battery still has enough charge to finish hibernating, but still I get the same result.

I have no idea what could have caused this since its been a while since I last used hibernation, but I didn't have this problem before as I hibernate often on battery before. Anybody else encountered this problem? I have win7 home premium x64.

Have you recreated the hibernation file?

    Hibernation file?

I don't remember doing any changes to hibernation settings (I don't even know where they are. :p). I have changed a little on my power plan (adjusted the time it goes to sleep when idle), but nothing else.

You have something that corrupted your hibernation file (hibernate.sys in C:\) or you have a driver (or missing one) that create a problem during the hibernation process.

Ensure that you have the latest drivers on your system. And make sure you uninstall your old drivers first, before putting new drivers (it's not needed for Windows generic drivers). Also ensure that you have the latest BIOS on your system.

To help you out, Windows 7 has a diagnostic tool:
Here is a quick tutorial to open it and use it:

Thanks for the reply GB! I didn't know you could do those stuff in Command Prompt. :)

The diagnosis gave me 2 errors, but it doesn't seem related to my hibernate issue (the first error was talking about dimming the screen is disabled when on AC, and the second is high CPU usage).

Hmm, I am not sure if this might have affected my problem, but a couple of days ago, I tried to install the latest ATI driver from their website, but it seems buggy as the Catalyst Control Center doesn't seem to install properly (in spite of uninstalling all ATI stuff before installing the new one), so what I did was I performed a System Restore back to the date before I tried the new drivers.

Shall I reinstall my video card driver? I'm afraid I would mess things up. lol
