I re-installed Windows XP on my new computer and now the Hibernate function doesn't show up when I go to shut down. Only Stand By, Turn Off, and Restart show up. I went to the Power Options in Control Panel, then the Hibernate tab. Enabled Hibernation, and it still doesn't show up. Could it be a driver that I didn't install or what?

Make sure any power management drivers/software the originally came with it are reinstalled.

Are you hitting the shift key while your cursor is over the standby button? Just checking.

If you've enabled it, try this:

Display Hibernate Option on the Shut Down dialog
    Contributed by Graham Vosloo

"For some reason, Hibernate isn't available from the default Shut Down dialog. But you can enable it simply enough, by holding down the SHIFT key while the dialog is visible. Now you see it, now you don't!"

    or try this:

Thanks, I didn't know about holding down shift. I think I'll go with that last link and add it back to the Shut Down dialog. Is there any drawback at all to using hibernate as opposed to shutting down completely?

Hm, I seem to be missing the System part of \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\ System\Shutdown

Ah, I like the shift thing. The other thing you may be able to do if you want is to make it so when you press the power button on your laptop it will hibernate. That is what mine does since I didn't know about that shift thing. On my Dell, to do this left click on the desktop and go properties > screen saver > power > advanced. I am not sure if this is common to all laptops though. Just another potential solution to the problem.

    it's hotfix KB893056.

If you can't locate it via update, the zip file is at the bottom of the page here.

You need to add the 2 keys "System" and "Shutdown", then create a DWORD value named "ShowHibernationButton" and set its data to 1, in "Shutdown"

My bad, I should have explained it better.
