I re-installed windows MCE 2005 and the required drivers and utilities on my dell E1405. I am having funny problem. I do not see the hibernate option when I click on "start/turn off my computer".
The device manager shows ACPI multiprocessor PC detected. Hibernate option is turned ON in the power settings in control panel. (The hibernate option shows up in one of the drop down boxes where we select what to do if say the lid is closed, etc.)
Funny thing is...when I press the "FN+F1" (key sequence to hibernate on the dell e1405)...it does! So hibernate is internally working, its just that I dont see the option when I normally do start/turn off.
This option was there before I reinstalled the OS. I also think that it was there before I reinstalled some of the drivers (I think the sigmatel sound river/ricoh card driver... these had some problems in reinstalling).. but I am not sure.
any ideas?
Thanks

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate -> Enable Hibernate
Is that checked off? -
Have you updated XP? Hibernation is a bit weird. On mine, I just have it set to go into hibernate when i hit the power button. I don't think it shows up on my shut down options either.

ya i have updated XP. I distinctly remember it did show up in the shutdown dialog box before i fiddled around and reinstalled OS and other drivers..
One more thing...i did install the microsoft hotfix for dual core ACPI issues...but I am not sure if this caused the problem or no... and the funny thing is...i dont see an uninstall for this hotfox in add/remove programs... i could do it manually by booting it using recovery console and manually unistalling the hotfix...but I want to know where the problem lies. -

apparently a common problem with SP2.
I'm going to move this to software in case it might help out some other users. -

thanks...though it doesnt post the link to the hotfix.. anyways..it was great you found this post of the support website...even after lotsa googling I couldnt hit this site.

Maybe the hotfix isn't out yet. It looks like the article was created earlier this month.

For Windows installs where the Hibernate button isn't present in the Shut Down dialog -- if you hold down Shift -- the Standby button turns into 'Hibernate' (which is in the KB document from Microsoft as well)

Yeah i saw that too. I think sujay was wanting both features. The MS doc is really kind of strange. It gives you a registry edit, but sounds like you have to have the hotfix downloaded in order for the registry edit to work. I wonder if you can just do the registry edit and it will work or not.

Thanks, I am seeing the same thing.
I just reinstalled XP on my e1505 and thought for sure I remember seeing the Hibernate option. I guess Dell must be doing this hotfix, as I just received my laptop on 7/18/06.
ps. Thanks SouthernGirl for all the good information you have been posting. I wanted to get rid of the partition and junkware that Dell installed. I got through a reformat, XP reinstall, and driver reinstall. Man, my laptop just seems so much cleaner, organized, and efficient. -
I have the Microsoft Patch and Registry file that allows you to have the 4 options in the shutdown dialog.

The zip file contains the Microsoft Patch and Registry file.
Install the Microsoft Patch and then the registry file. Then restart your computer.
