Is there a way to hide all the inactive icons in vista such as the avira icon and the sound bar icon.

On my XP notebook I have it set so that the only icon showing is my wireless connection icon. In vista it doesn't give me the option to hide the sound icon or the avira icon.

    Thanks

You mean the system tray icons?

Right-click the taskbar, Properties, Notification Area tab, check "Hide inactive icons" (or click Customize and fine-tune it if you prefer).

You should be able to set "Volume" and Avira icon to 'Always Hide' in the customize taskbar settings.

Or you can just completely disable the sound icon

i have most of my icons set to always hide.

sometimes, these icons revert back to "hide when inactive."
why won't it stay on the setting that i chose for it?

You can reset custom notification list by going to
    Regedit - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify,
delete both IconStreams and PastIconStreams in the right pane. Just backup the registry key if you are not sure. Then restart your explorer.exe in the Task Manager. And follow what swarmer has suggested to fine-tune it.

When I Right-click the taskbar > Properties > Notification Area tab it will only let me customize "icons". It will not let me customize "System Icons" which consist of clock, volume, network, and power. It will only let me turn those off or on, it wont let me set those "system icons" to hide.

    Any ideas?

Go on the orbit, right click, select properties, notification area, and check hide inactive icons.

lol, none of you are paying attention.

read what i said again carefully.

""When I Right-click the taskbar > Properties > Notification Area tab it will only let me customize "icons". It will not let me customize "System Icons" which consist of clock, volume, network, and power. It will only let me turn those off or on, it wont let me set those "system icons" to hide.""

Is it the Tray Notifications Cache? I will have a clean list after running the cleaner?

    EDIT: Thanks, it's the same.

Well, at least I did pay the attention :p

There's softwares which might do the trick, but none of them look trusted.. You might google it to check :)

HAHA. I get it now. Well, when they are off, it "hides" them.

Edit: You need a try commander or something. On Dells, if you have Quickset.exe, you can hit Fn F3 to see the battery status. And you can just map the Network Connections to a shortcut to your quick launch bar. That way you can hit WinKey + 1 and that brings up the "Connect to" dialog. I do alot of Wi-Fi hot spot jumping and that comes in handy.

You could always disable the whole thing! :O

    1. Open regedit and navigate to : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    2. Right click in an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD value.
    3. Name the new value NoTrayItemsDisplay
    4. Double click the new value and in the dialog box assign it a data value of 1. Click OK
    5. Close regedit
    6. Log off/on or reboot for the change will take effect

To re-enable change the value to 0.
