Just wondering...Is it worth it to upgrade ur Laptop from Home Premium to Ultimate??

let's say it costs about $175 to upgrade, what are you getting from ultimate that makes it more worth while than Home Premium??

    Just a small question.....

not much at all basically a couple games, dream scene, drive encryption. IMO not worth it at all. Business is best b/c it doesn't have media center. but wait for windows 7 if you are gunna upgrade.

No, it is definitely not worth $175 to upgrade. The few extra features you get from Ultimate you can do with free programs or cheap commercial programs.

But, if you're set on upgrading and you're a student, you can get the upgrade for $65 here: http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx
However, I still don't think it's worth $65 going from Home Premium to Ultimate.

personally, i would feel like an idiot for having a laptop that says "ultimate" whenever i start the computer.. or log out.. or whatever.. especially when you learn the difference between ultimate and home premium, with ultimate, you'll look like you just buy the most expensive of everything just for the sake of having the most expensive thing

    just my two cents

SSD + no password = only visable for like 1/2 second anyway...

but I do agree Home Premium is the best bet.

I like that attitude - isn't it strange how one sometimes has to pay a lot nowadays to get something plain too?... ah well

No necessarily, I believe there were a few business oientated details in Vista Business that Ultimate doesn't have...
    Looking at networking...

    To the OP:

How often have I heard this question...
And one of the best answers I have seen is:
If you have to ask, possibly not.

Especially at that price it isn't worth it.

As a student you can also get Vista Business for free at certain universities...

I don't feel like an idiot at all...and I run Ultimate.

I need Ultimate and I'm running it, if you don't, that's OK with me.
And yeah, I really like to see "ultimate" at log in and log out. :)

    Thanks...

I second "crash" in this. $175 is too much, but 65$ is cool for the upgrade. And yes, I do use Ultimate.

Home Premium seems to be the norm for every delivering systems in North America, and Business in Europe.

    cheers ...

    Hmm... my laptop is European.
On the argument of "liking what it says on the screen"

I like to see "Vista Business" on my screen :D

2 ssd in raid0 and a quadcore and you don't even see that screen as the logon sound plays simultan with the welcometowindows sound and animation. :)

if you buy an oem yourself, you may choose ultimate, it's not that much more to pay. but an update is unneeded. business or homepremium are both more than good enough.

You mean Windows 7, as in Vista SP3? Because that's pretty much what it is. And Vista is a great o/s. It just comes down to the user's abilities.

I use one feature in Ultimate that's not in Premium (but I think it's in Business); advanced drive backup. The feature works great but for $175 it wouldn't be worth it imo. But for $65 it might.

My user abilities are fine the OS isn't. Too many reviews and tech sites agree with me. No one said you can't polish a turd. :)
