He might have two graphic cards in his computer. One for the middle monitor, and one giving output to the two on the sides. I think he might be able to afford that setup.

Usually, when you hook up an external monitor on a laptop, you get the option to either have the desktop extended, or use only one at a time.

If you use extended desktop, then you can drag windows from one monitor to the other.

I suppose the same is possible on desktops.

From my Nvidia display control panel:
"Clone is great for presentations, Dualview is perfect for a larger desktop"

Anyways, I think 3 monitors is a waste of electric power. He should be using virtual desktops or something...
BTW, this is old(4/06), you can actually see him using Windows XP.

Now as far as what he was using, there are multiple solutions to that. You mentioned one: A VGA splitter. But I think he can afford something better than that.
    Maybe something like this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...ga+splitter&kw=vga+splitter&parentPage=search

    Guess we will never know..

At work I use a windows based process control system called a quad. The name comes from the fact I have 4x 20 inch monitors hooked together in a square. I can have anything on any of the 4 and the mouse passes from screen to screen. It all runs off of one Dell precision 390 computer. I am not 100% sure how this works but could find out probably. With a good internet
connection it would be one awesome surfing/gaming set-up!

I'm surprised he doesn't have a setup like they do in the movie Starfish or whatever it was called. Get a quad SLI desktop and hook up two monitors to each graphic card and you have eight monitors. It should work as long as something doesn't crap out at the software end.

I think someone should really introduce him to the rotating cube in Compiz. With the work he does it sounds like it would reduce the need of one of those monitors.

Gates and I are almost exactly the same age. But that's definitely not how he uses 3 screens at once. :D

How do you know he doesn't have three (or more) PCs or maybe a Mac or two connected to those monitors?

That must be what I have at work but with 4 screens. Can you move
your mouse from 1 screen to the other? I know you have to go into the display settings and pick how many screens you have for it to work.

Really? Who then was the owner of a certain Porsche 959 when they first became available and it was not legal for street use in the USA? It had to sit in a warehouse for many years and only came out to be driven off the highways. It was only several years latter that the car was cleared for use on US roads. Know who the owner is? ... Bill Gates.

BTW I believe he does own his own plane as well.
