recently received new XPS M1530 and am currently updating some of the software it came with.
My system told me I don't have vista SP1 so I used windows update to downloaded all 24 of the updates it listed, but still no sp1!!!! Do I have to do this manually or am i missing something?
The windows update on my desktop (which uses XP) downloaded sp1 & sp2 itself, so i can't work out why vista won't do the same.

Yeah it's SP1 that doesn't like the pre SP1 SigamTel drivers, they conflict. That's probably the reason SP1 is not showing up. If you uninstall the audio SigmaTel drivers, SP1 should show up and ready for download.
Oh btw Dell recently released post SP1 SigmaTel drivers for their laptops. After you install SP1, install the new Dell SigmaTel drivers from their website.

Thanks.
umm stupid question but where are the SigmaTel Drivers? I can't locate this on my system, is it called something else?
Also I have looked at the Dell website and the only SigmaTel driver update they have is of december 2007. As my lappy is less than 2 weeks old should i not already have this? -
Here's a link to those drivers. I found them for the Vostro laptops. I assume you are running Vista 32bit.

SigmaTel are your audio drivers. You'll need to go to Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall Programs -> Look for SigmaTel Audio, then uninstall. Then Reboot !
Install SP1, it may take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour for it to show up. I always refresh by doing "Check for Updates". When you are finsihed installing SP1. Then install the new SigmaTel Audio drivers. That should do the trick. -
yes i am running 32 bit. to many issues with 64 at the moment for me to consider it.
Should have been more specific before, but I've already gone to control panel -> programs etc. and there is no SigmaTel listed at all, i have something called advanced audio FX engine but i don't think this is it. -
Pretty much all of the current Dell laptops excluding the recent models Vostro 1510 etc, have used SigmaTel Audio. Did you order the Soundblaster software edition with your laptop? Going by what Dell's website says your XPS m1530 uses SigmaTel drivers.
You could always download the SP1 service pack from Microsoft or you can call Dell. They offer a one time only to send out free replacement disk. You could request Vista w/SP1 from them. -

Yes I did reboot the system and I checked for further updates just to be sure.
Guess i'll have to try downloading it manually. Can I assume doing it this way it will just update vista to sp1 and it won't be as if i've installed a 2nd operating system? -
