If you go HERE some of you may see a red checkbox at MSE & WebM VP9 which means that youtube VP9 isn't supported for playback. I always had it red on Firefox and never thought it could be fixed and felt jealous to Chrome users.

Until recently accidentally found the proper setting in about:config after which I no longer have to wait this SLOOOOOW youtube caching to playback video without pauses on my 4Mb internet with so-so quality.

That's it! I don't know why the heck it was turned off. Was it stupid Mozilla's habbit to bring new features disabled by default to 95% of users or was it some addon that messed with it but I feel kinda angry that it spoiled my life for years while it could be fixed in like 5 sec top.
P.S. BTW probably your laptop doesn't have hardware acceleration for vp9 so if you need battery life for all price then don't turn vp9 on.

I'll occasionally install Firefox and have found it getting worse with every subsequent update. Unfortunately, it's installed on many family computers, including my parents and wife who are reluctant to change so I can't switch them to something else.

Best solution why didn't report to FireFox support maybe they could do a proper answer to the problem. I have no problem with FF49 watching Youtube video and I watched on DSL had no issues for speed and with Fiber don't notice the slow down but I do see there are more ads before any Youtube videos. Alot of it has to do with people adding toolbars and addons without researching what will those addons do to slow down the Browser. Now if yours was free and clean of everything just FireFox and problem persist then you should contact their support about it but if you loaded the Browser then you will have to remove or disable one by one and find out what is causing it before just blaming FireFox. I use FF with a few plugins and have no issues with speed or lags in loading Youtube videos.
