I have 58 running right now. Besides all the other stuff (I think my printer accounts for a few, with CFP w/D+ (2), Avira (2), SAS, A2 (2), FF, Thunderbird, Seagate DiscWizard (3) and Task Manager running. With 2GB of RAM, I'm not worried about it!

Does it really matter if we know your (blocked out) computer name? It almost reminds me of when people blocked out their routers IP, the same one nearly everyone else has. It's not like you're giving away your debit card and pin numbers.

Maybe you should instead utilize the anonymity of the internet and use a different handle when you go to "the wrong sites" than that you use when you go to "the right sites."

Got a list of them all handy?

EDIT: On hiding the account username - perhaps it's just something embarrassing, as opposed to something security-oriented? Perhaps it's not the poster's computer (nothing nefarious, mom or dad, perhaps)? Just speculating here, so don't take umbrage.

But I need a new computer or at least more RAM because most of my apps are getting too bloated for a 2.66GHz Pentium 4 and 512MB of RAM.

The no. of processes depends upon the software, programs, etc you have installed and running at that point of time. (The system does not seem to be infected)
Checkout the loads of software you have installed in the 1st image and the 2nd image has all the services related to the software, that normally startup automatically when the OS starts, and are required for the proper functioning of the OS. Disabling services could cripple XP.
If you want to get rid of the extra software, remove/uninstall them with CCleaner or Revo Uninstaller. Else live with it. :D

OK, besides quicker start up times, what's the big deal in having fewer processes running if you have enough RAM, which most certainly nearly everyone here has.

i like a clean system. i'd rather not run processes i don't need. just like i might have space on my floor for additional pieces of paper, if they serve no purpose, i'd rather not have them there.

I limit what runs, and what is installed, on my PC simply because I do not want anything unneccessary that I do not use out there. Those are simply openings for problems to come in the way I see them.

Out there, where? If you mean the internet what's the purpose of having a router, firewall, AV and spyware, which certainly ups the number of processes.

I'd like to see what dreamz has running with opera, foobar2000, miranda, task manager running. That would leave 12 at start up.

On my PC. I simply do not install programs I do not use and I do not allow programs I cannot uninstall, but do not want to use, to run, and those I cannot disallow from running, but I do not want to be capable of accessing the internet, I block.
