    follow these steps:

    1. go into msconfig and disable whatever you don't need. as far as i know, it's safe to disable everything there.
    2. check black viper: http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm
    3. do some searches for those processes. figure out what they are and determine if you need them or not by reading their descriptions, testing, etc.

Why are people so obsessed with having the number of processes as low as possible if you are not suffering any resources or performance issues ?

I am running Vista Home Premium (SP1) and am showing 48 this morning, which is up a bit from normal, but I am running an instance of Firefox with a few tabs open, RocketDock, ZoneAlarm, WMDC, PerfectDisk, and FeedGhost (with about 250 feeds open), so I guess 48 is OK.

Yea, it's not mine though, I got this laptop from work seeing that mines was giving me problems. So it's only temporary til' next yr. :) But she runs fine nevertheless. Averaging 25 - 29 processes!
