If you don't know how to check: Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Click on Processes tab. Number of processes is in bottom left.
I have 55 with no application windows up.
-
Desktop on boot - 21 (includes AV). normal use - 24-25.
Laptop on boot - 19 (includes AV). normal use - 23-25.
Both run XP.
I'm pretty sure Vista throws a bunch more processes in. stupid bloat. -
Wow, that is a lot lower than I see on most peoples. I guess I should have put lower options.
At my high school, all of the freshmen are using tablet computers that they just play cheap addictinggames type stuff all day. One of them I was trying to speed up his computer and he had 88 processes running. -
i'm running 57 on a fresh install of xp professional on my laptop (all programs installed and working).
-
22 processes with AV, mouse, and NHC
-
38. But I have a few messenger programs plus Winamp and Firefox always running.
-
I'm currently at 38, but I have Firefox, Foobar, and MSN open.
-
37 at idle (fresh boot with winamp and some network stuff)
-
60. However, this thread has inspired me to lower that number.
-
Less than 40; I work light
-
I have an average of about 35 processes, when windows just boots. One of my laptops is running Windows XP Home, the other Windows XP Pro. It includes firewall, windows defender, antivirus, and windows search. How did you guys cut it into the 20's?
-
30 w/ AV and MSN and a couple other things opened.
-
-
41, but laptops tend to run more services than desktops so you shouldn't base your decision to trim services off this poll. If it's running fine, then don't go mucking around and turning services off that could destablize your OS. For example, laptops have battery management, wireless, touchpad, hotkeys, etc. etc.
-
48 currently (voice recog. running, browser and some apps)
42(fresh boot)
you can try this if your looking to dig in to windows startup items.
AutoRuns for Windows v8.61
Introduction
This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.

Right now I have 21 processes running but on a fresh boot only 18.
-
Right now i have 57 and under normal usage it's that neighborhood. I tend to leave programs i use open (utorrent, itunes, firefox) and have some stuff in the backrground i use often enough for me to not to want to shut them down (like my bluetooth processes, 6 of them, hotsync, a vnc-server, atitool)

Most of my processes are viruses scanners or various spyware scanners.

I just have one virus scanner, AVG, but many other spyware scanners. I guess they do not scan for viruses, but they scan for spyware, malware and other types of harmful software.
-
Mutiple spyware scanners are ok, and by many recommended. It's just mulitple AV software that's a bad idea.
-
41 - fresh boot, but with KVIRC, GAIM, Creative Mediasource and Firefox running.
So I voted for under 40, because I boot with around 35 or so with AV, firewall, and some other stuff running. -
I have 30 on this laptop with networking enabled. when I am doing audio it goes down to about 25. A lot of networking stuff isnt neede unless you have shared volumes et. Like computer browsing, server, workstation. Also DNS, SNMP, RIP and a couple other are only really for network administration. If you only ever connect at home and use DHCP with no shares you can get away with a lot less network crud. Also indexing is a resource hog and a waste. Turn it off! If you dont print you dont need spooler, if you dont do automatic updates you dont need auto updates or BITS. There are many lists online which detail these and which are safe or suggested to kill.
My desktop DAW is at 18 all day long. 22 when I do transfers/backups. -
i have 30.
-
-
SH!T.. i have some 70+ apps running.. and most of them i need also.. its like 4 windows sider bars.. the high def audio from dell.. avg.. then some other junk which is i need to start up..
-
I have 27 including NHC on my laptop and 22 on my desktop. It makes a world of difference to keep it as low as possible. Especially if you have an older pc like me.
Leon -
i have 37. After turning off unnecessary XP services, turning off system restore, turning off remote assistance etc....
-
On XP Pro boot i have 15. Normal number is around ~20 after i have everything running that i run throughout the day.
-
It seems vista just runs a ton more of processes than xp ever did. Everyone should be clear on what version of windows they're running when they declare the number of processes they've got going.
-
114 processes currently running. :d
-
Wow. Makes me feel better about my 85 processes.
-
Numbers don't matter, if you have the minimum number of processes running to get the features you want.
-
@Lysander & @Matt
To both of you I ask, what OS? -
Windows Vista Business. That could be why.... I only had 55 in XP...
-
Very minimalistic XP SP1: 15 (which included networking!)
Very minimalistic Vista: 34
Normal XP SP2: 23 (including Nod32, which has 2 processes)
Normal Vista: 57
I am a real speed 'junkie', so I know all about optimizing Windows XP. For optimizing XP check these settings out:
- services.msc, which has tons of services that you don't need. However do not disable/stop the wrong one, cause some services are depending on each other.
- regedit - HKEY_Local_Machine / HKEY_Current_User > Software > Microsoft > CurrentVersion > Run, which has all the startup processes. You can also try and disable them through msconfig (start > run > msconfig) which is a safer option to do.
- Start Menu > Programs > Startup, which also hold programs that start with Windows.
- Do not install an active virusscanner, but a passive one and check once in a while.
- Run CCleaner once in a while
- TweakUI, to tweak the UI to it's ugliest limits
- BootVis for a faster boottime (under 30 seconds is doable on most machines).
- Use free alternatives which are faster.
Such as Foxit Reader, it is a lot smaller than Adobe's Acrobat Reader and it doesn't run in a background process.
MusikCube / Foobar2000 instead of Winamp, which has the Winamp Agent.
UXTheme Patcher (check Softpedia for the latest version) instead of Style XP or Windows Blinds. This patch, patches the theme DLL on the harddrive instead of in the RAM memory.
And I am sure, other people have some great tips too, this are just my little secrets -
-
71. I feel sorta bad about this now after seeing a lot of the posts in this.
-
42 running on Win XP sp2
-
51 with win XP. A good few of them are Toshiba utilities.
-
If you want to get into my Linux install, 97
-
Well I got into a fight with the Lenovo TVT stuff and used Spybot S&D on it. now I am at 19 processes in XP sp2. With networking and sound and all. I basically got rid of the pre-installed spyware and training wheels.
-
13 on XP Home SP2.
-
46 at the moment.
My biggest hogs are Firefox (90 MB) followed way behind by dmw.exe (18 MB). -
I'm at 18 not counting antivirus... -
And i've gone up from 55-ish to 75-ish. I blame vista. It's not slower, it's just more. I think that maybe vista shows more stuff than xp, but not necesseraliy use more resources. Don't know though, that's just pure speculation
-
Only 65 in LG S1 laptop
-
I have 61 in T60 with AV...lol..Damn that's alot compar with the others.
BTW, one question is it normal for explorer.exe to use more than 50Mb? -
35 processes in Vista Home Premium(Sidebar and Aero running).
-
any chance u could list the services etc that you stopped!
i have 66ish - vista premium
