If I were to upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate, how messy would it be?

A clean install is out of the question, as it would take days and days of work to change things back to how I have them.

I like to keep a "spotless" system. When I uninstall programs I go into the registry and do some manual cleanup - I even remove their tray icons from the taskbar properties section (which is just a matter of clearing two registry values). Is the upgrade worth the hassle?

EDIT: The Home Premium version came with my computer, however the key doesn't contain "OEM" (which I was told signifies an OEM version of Vista).

None of our customers have tried the process, but, as I understand it, the Anytime Upgrade does very little more than unlock the functionality that is already present-but-locked. Thus far, I've not been willing to spend the money required to perform the upgrade (my PC is not worth it), so my word is hardly final.

I would like to know, however, if the system running Vista is the same one in your signature? If so, I'd be interested to know if the initial install of Vista Home Premium was really worth the install. I have a desktop about 3 years newer on which I've already come to regret installing Vista.

No, it's on my new VAIO CR, however I still use the desktop whenever possible (like right now), as it's a great machine.

The only reasons I'd upgrade are the file versioning, the file encryption and the full system backup features.

That said, TrueCrypt is free and I've gotten great suggestions for backup. As far as versioning, I'm used to the "old-fashioned" way of simply creating new files, and I also know that third-party applications exist, however it really would be nice to have it built into Windows.

I upgraded my Home Premium to Ultimate (full install) without a hitch. Make sure you save your important files first. It will take a while to upgrade, for me about 2 hours. I could've freshly installed but the loading of programs will take at least a couple of days.

Do you have to reformat? Reinstall programs?
