Well, after spending the last two weeks setting up my laptop, I realized I'm not sure where a lot of my HD space went.... I can only account for about 50 gigs of programs, 25 music, and 20 of various other things. I have however used about 170 gigs... How do I find out exactly how much I've used on what?

Certain types of files like your hibernation file and system restore files will also add to the total space used. Simplest thing you can do is go run disk cleanup (accessories panel, or type cleanup in Vista start). It will show you if your temp files are huge or anything like that, select the stuff you want to clean and go.

Also check out the second tab on that panel (more options) and consider doing a cleanup on your systemrestore files. Sometimes they can get out of hand if you've made a lot of changes in a short time. At one point I had over 15GB of extra systemrestore points. Using cleanup will clean out all but the most recent restore point.

There are many programs out there that will analyze your Disk Drive and show you what and how much is using what space.

Also, sometimes whenever vista has one of those little error things it might save a report for you to send in later. And sometimes those reports can get large in size and number , i didn't know about them at first and without realizing it they took up about 60gb of space which is a ton of errors. They were from the first month i had my laptop to about 3/4 of the first year i had it so yea...

if this is your problem, search your programs for wercon (stands for windows error console). and just delete the history and disable it. I think some computers come with it already turned off
