When downloading a file, I would like to temporarily disable Stand By mode in Windows so I can walk away from the computer without the download being interrupted.

I know there is this program called Don't Sleep.

Software Don't Sleep 2.71 Prevent Shutdown, Stand By, Turn Off, Restart

Does anyone know of a way in Windows besides temporarily changing the stand by setting? That is too much work.

You can permanently disable standby (sleep?) in power settings under control panel. HTH.

Control panel -> Power options -> Change plan settings for your active power plan. If you need it to stay on forever, also check the hibernation settings under the advanced options.

Maybe just make your special plan by clicking "Create a power plan" (in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options), enabling or disabling whatever you need or don't need.

Is there any way to create a button for that plan to put in the tray or quick links near the Start button?

Clicking on the battery icon in the tray brings up a list that allows me to select a power plan on my Dell. I'm not sure if this is Dell-specific, though. Windows Mobility Center also includes a dialog that allows you to select a power plan. See Windows Help.
