I tried to get the notebook driver from ATI for my X700.. their compatibility link that I downloaded checked and said that I could not use the Mobility 5.12. Is that because I have it in already?...

Actually I checked the display adapters > X700 properties and I'm running driver version 6.14.10.6546.

Is this the latest? If not, how do I update ("Update Driver" button didn't work.. it just looks for a CD or such).

Go one www.google.com and look for X700 drivers and you will find the latest drivers.

Download, install, restart and you should be set.

Make sure that you get the Mobility Catalyst drivers and not the Catalyst -those don't install on laptops.

DriverHeaven.net has the Mobility 5.12 for download. Install those or the 5.11's - they are quite stable.

Which link should I use for DriverHeaven.net.. they indicate Mobility for the 5.9 I believe but nothing more recent than that.

At the ATI site I go Notebooks with ATI graphics > Mobility Catalyst 5.12 but the link there checks to see if I am able to install or not and the check says I can't install it.

I am pretty sure that I already installed the Mobility Catalyst 5.12.. how can I check it?

Alas poor Yorick, no joy yet, ay? I'm about to sack it for the night but here's a few answers to get you started.

"Which link should I use for DriverHeaven.net.. they indicate Mobility for the 5.9 I believe but nothing more recent than that."

Yes, it appears 5.9 is the latest mobility. If you're looking at the long list I am, for newer use "classic" (Control Panel) or "CCC" (Catalyst Control Center, often a resource hog (stick with Control Panel IMO)). You'll need the DHMod tool to make them mobility compatible.
    1. Download the drivers, run the extract\setup TO C:\ATI\Support, and let it fail.
    2. Use the previously downloaded DHMod tool, set to X700, point to C:\ATI\Support\xxxxxx, run to make them mobility, and let the setup run.
    3. Go to the driver directory (C:\ATI\Support\xxxxxxx\CPanel) and run the Control Panel setup separately.

"At the ATI site I go Notebooks with ATI graphics > Mobility Catalyst 5.12 but the link there checks to see if I am able to install or not and the check says I can't install it."

If you're not one of the "Notebook Manufacturers ... ... Supported" (and ACER is NOT) then you can't download the drivers from the recognition link. (ATI doesn't want to support the whole world.) However, here is a super top secret link to the 5.12 Catalyst Mobility with CCC (which I found elsewhere I've been browsing).

"I am pretty sure that I already installed the Mobility Catalyst 5.12.. how can I check it?"

Open the ATI Control Panel, preferably via a desktop link or SysTray link, and click the Option tab. The Catalyst Version on newer versions should be specified there.

    GOOD LUCK!!

I just installed CATALYST Version 5.12 on my acer 8106 and now need for speed: most wanted turns off the notebook after a few minutes of racing.
Seems like this only happens when running on ac, maybe the gpu is overheating?
