I open a Windows Explorer window.
Press "CTRL-F"
Highlight a date range.
Then nothing happens. I do select a drive in the pane on the left. Nothing happens.
I can not get the search to begin.

The search is immediate (unlike the XP search that gave you a progress bar and took 5 seconds to 5 hours.
) When you hit Ctrl-f, you're selecting "Date Modified" under search filters, right? Your results should be instant.
If you see "no matches", then it could be that whatever your' searching for has the hidden attribute applied - or that there are no matches. -
w7 (& w8) search is good for finding the calculator and latest pictures of the cat.
For serious searching when result accuracy is important :
1st class search program: Agent Ransack - Free File Searching Utility
FreeCommander - freeware file manager , a real explorer incl an excellent search. -
Are you waiting for the green progress bar in the address bar to make it across the screen? Although Win7 can be fast when searching indexed locations, it can also take awhile if you are searching somewhere that isn't indexed (broadly speaking, somewhere not in My Documents). In that case, you'll see a green progress bar where it says "C:\Program Files (x86)" or wherever you're searching. This will quickly progress across much of the address bar, and then move a lot more slowly near the end, until it eventually finishes. It's only when it finishes that it has found all the results.
But generally, yes, Windows 7 does start searching once you've typed something, or very soon thereafter.
(I've used Windows 7's search quite a bit at work, and often in non-indexed places. So, even though I use XP at home [and prefer searching with XP], I've used Windows 7's search quite a bit... more than I'd have liked to)
Edit: It might also help to post a screenshot showing the problem. We're all really guessing at what the cause might be.
How do I do a date range search in Windows 7?
