I have a desktop PC.. It has windows XP which I had to buy because the original copy it had broke down or was hacked or something...

    The point is..

I have the windows xp sp2 dvd, and I want to put it on my Sony TZ191.

    I have some questions...

1.-How do I put it on my TZ without being detected as hacking or pirated? Do I just disable the windows upgrade in the desktop?

2.-Will I be able to play red alert, half life 1, warcraft 3, diablo 2 at full settings with my TZ WITH windows XP?

Please some help would be greatly appreciated...

Using a single-license copy of Windows on two separate computers at the same time is not legal AFAIK. Right?

Edit: OMG I misspelled "separate" as "seperate"!!! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. :)

No, it would not be legal unless he used the existing COA key from the original desktop on tha machine and plans to use teh one that came with his new disk on the TZ

Disks are unimportant--licenses are what count. He may have two licenses given his situation, but he also likely has an OEM license and a retail license, with only a retail key. That will not work, I'm afraid

You would be able to play the games but I should recommend buying a lisence key from Microsoft as it is elegal to use the same lisence key on two computers at the same time. For that reason, it should not be done.

EDIT: If you unregister XP on the old laptop, then you can use it. That would be a good idea :)

Probably not, two or three problems:

    1) Most (if not all) OEM copies of Windows tie into certain hardware and it will not activate on another machine once one has been activated.
    2) Most OEM recovery disk will not install on another manufacturers machine.
    3) Even if you get around 1 and 2 IRRC the OEM XP license states that it is for use on only one PC (period) and goes on to define PC as "mother board". Therefore, I do not believe it would be legal to use on the TZ unless it was never been installed on anything else.

You might try looking to see if you can buy a new OEM copy of XP from someone like new egg. You will have to read the license, but I believe it would probably be legal if you bought and installed a new hard drive at the same time.

Would I save money if I buy just the key and use the existing DVD?

I do not think so, but I don't know.

Are you perhaps a student / or employed in academia? Then significant discounts might be available to you. (e.g., I bought an XP Pro upgrade from Home Ed. for 17 EUR at my institution)

Why can he not just unregister XP on his HP and then use the original disk and lisence key?

He never said anything about it been a recovery disk.

He said it was "from an HP" which would seem to indicate that it was an OEM copy provided with a new PC.

However, admittedly I am making an assumption there.

Therefore, whether he can unregister and use it on another machine depends on what kind of license is with the copy on the HP.

If it is an OEM license, he probably cannot use it.
If it is a retail license, he probably can use it.

Of course, he would still need to carefully read and comply with the license terms.

    Yes, thanks for clarifying.

He would have to unregister it and just check the license terms to be fair to Microsoft.

I understand your assumption now :)

    Thanks again,

    Matt. I
