In Windows XP, I can set my laptop's resolution higher than 1024x768 and also choose widescreen resolutions. Upon upgrading to Windows 7, I can only choose 800x600 and 1024x768.
Other details:
Video card is ATI Xpress 200M
Using v. 9.11 ATI Catalyst Legacy drivers (latest available version moddable by Mobility Modder)
Native resolution is 1024x768
Laptop is an old 2004-2005 era ASUS A6R laptop
If I close the laptop lid and use an external monitor, other resolutions higher than 1024x768 appear in Control Panel-Display-Screen Resolution
- Laptop is set to 'Do nothing' if lid is closed on Control Panel->Power Settings(both plugged in and on battery)
- External monitor is connected to laptop thru VGA
- External monitor resolution is also 1024x768 (same as laptop's monitor)
- Refresh rate is set at 60 HZ for both laptop monitor and external monitor (external monitor does not support higher than 60 HZ at 1024x768)
Screenshot of Control Panel-Display-Screen Resolution options:
Left - Laptop lid is open; Right - Laptop lid is closed and external CRT monitor is connected:

So are you trying to get widescreen res and making it scrollable on your standard screen laptop LCD?
-
you want to use a high resolution on a low resolution screen and make the screen scrollable?
I know there is such a registry tweak for intel:
changing "Display1_DownScalingSupported" from "0" to "1"
It depends on your driver and as far as I know there is no such tweak for windows 7 and ATI/AMD gpu. -

I am VERY interested to hear the answer to this. I've been wondering about how to do this for a LONG time. I used to have to manually as EDID information to the xorg.conf file under Ubuntu. I never found a reliable way to do anything like that under Windows.

in the ati driver utility, one can define own resolutions, not? i thought one can.
i can do that in the intel, too. -

I cannot. I'm using Intel HD, GMA4500, and GMA950. I haven't seen anything like that under Windows. All the resolutions available are in 4:3, or whatever the main panel is. Even if I disable the main panel and use only the Output, it's still in 4:3 resolutions.

How do I enable widescreen resolutions and resolutions higher than 1024x768 on a laptop with a 4:3 1024x768 native resolution
