I currently have a Windows 2000 computer. I'm thinking of buying the OEM version of Windows XP Home Edition (it's cheaper).
So is installing as simple as popping in the CD into the CD drive and clicking install while in Windows 2000? Does that erase everything on the hard drive for me?

there are a lot of guides on the forums u could use but yes it is very simple to install the OS

No. You've got entirely the wrong concept.
1.) Back up everything on to CDs or an external Flash/Hard Drive.
2.) Get all the drivers you need. Download them off manafacturer websites if you don't have the drivers.
3.) Insert the XP CD while in Windows 2000.
4.) Shut down the PC, leaving the CD in.
5.) Once you've hit the on button, go into the boot menu, and choose CD/DVD Drive.
6.) Follow the XP Setup Instructions.
In Addition to that, this is a nice simple guide. It is for Dells, for the same steps apply to reformatting any laptop.

Essentially, yes. By slipping the program CD into the drive, the computer should recognize you're trying to upgrade from 2000 to XP. I know you will get some messages about the computer running an XP compatibility check. So, you may get messages about some "older" devices not meeting XP requirements. You shouldn't lose any data, but you can NEVER be 100% sure on that. You should always back up all your important data and have program CDs and keys before undertaking any upgrade of OS, in case something happens and you end up screwing things up.
But what Lil Mays is eluding to is that it's best to back up everything (data, programs, mp3s, etc.) onto an external hard disk or media, and reformat your hard drive so you're essentially starting from scratch. It may take some patience, but I find installing an OS this way gives you the best performance and fewest errors in the future. -
Oem Media is not deisgn for upgrade pretty sure it won,nt let you do
-
Nope, OEM won't let you do it.
Also, since we're talking about SP2, be sure to have 512MB of memory. -
I believe you can't upgrade from Windows 2000 professional to Windows XP Home Edition anyways, so a clean install is the best way to go.

Yes only support upgrade path is 2000 pro to xp pro and not via oem media
How do I install Windows XP?
