How do I permanently grant permission to certain programs without having to disable UAC? I'm an administrator. I tried going into properties then under the compatibility tab I checked "Run this program as an administrator" under Privilege Level area. Yet, it keeps asking me for permission. The programs in question are Winrar and Winamp.

not sure you can override uac. its either on or off.

Try right clicking on their EXE's, going to properties->compatibility tab and checking the 'Run As Admin' box (bottom)

If you take ownership of the directory it's installed in, you shouldn't have any more problems. Right-click on the directory, and click 'advanced' under the security tab. It will pop up with a new window. Go to the ownership tab and click 'edit.' Make your user the owner, and check 'replace owner on subcontainers and objects.'

Pirx is right, you do not need to jump through the other suggested hoops to do this. Something is wrong with the way (or place) where they are currently installed. My guess is both were installed when UAC was off and now they are trying to access their config data in the program directory itself. If they were installed with UAC on, they would be using a virtualized proragm files folder and not throwing this permissions request.

I'll try reinstalling it to see if it works. -

So I just installed a free imaging backup software and have set it so it has admin privileges, but it still asks for permission. Weird.

If you still need it, here is a link on how to run a program (specifically, make a shortcut to the program,) and permanently give it admin rights, while UAC is still ON.
Thus, you won't get the UAC prompt any longer, (at least for this shortcut that you created.)

Ofcourse, the icon for this shortcut won't be the correct one, the same link also shows how to change the icon of the shortcut to what it should be.
Hope this helps. -
- Right Click on the shortcut -> Choose "Properties"
- Go to "Security" tab -> Click "Edit"
- Select your user account name -> Click and select "Full Control"
- Click "OK", again Click "OK".
Thanks!
