Hit PrtSc and then go into any image editing software e.g paint and hit paste :)

there's a button on your keyboard: "Prnt Scrn" = Print Screen

when you push it, it copies a screenshot to the clipboard and you can then copy it into a pic editor or word or whatever and save it.

the button should be around the num lock, pause, page up, page down, etc buttons

Pressing ALT+Prnt Scr captures just the active window...so, if you did not want to show your who desktop, and only want to show, say, your IE7 window...you can do it that way

EDIT > PASTE (tool bar on top)

    or simply hit CTRL+V

(now, who can tell us where CTRL+V comes from? CTRL+P brings up the PRINT dialogue, but there actually was a program that popularized CTRL +V

I've always had a problem with this. CTRL+V is not working, and Paste is shaded grey under Edit in Paint. Is this a Vista thing?

    CTRL+P works though ;)

Hmm.. if paste is greyed out then your prnt scrn button must not be working. Maybe it's a driver issue in Vista? I dunno. Try pushing it harder! Try starting a thread asking about this specifically in relation with vista to see if others have this problem. I don't have Vista (at least until my new laptop comes) so I can't help you there :(

It never worked when I was in XP either, which has me stumped. Maybe I disable something in Windows after install that effects the "print screen" function.

The origination of this is attributed to the programmers at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) for speeding up text editing.

I was told that they started with ctrl C for copy then thought that V looked like an insertion point so used that for paste then X for cut because it was next to C&V and looked like a pair of scissors.. I can't vouch for the authenticity of this tho, but it did sound feasible at the time!

Hmm... maybe a service is disabled that affects the print screen function? I'd have to look in to that, I don't know off-hand.

Did you do a clean install on your computer before using it? Or did you disable some services that other people say are "useless" to increase performance? It's possible it's linked to a service that may have been disabled with or without your knowledge. I'll look in to it.

Well, I did reenable everything again after the hotfix install. But I do turn off some Windows components in both Vista & XP, so that may be the reason.

Heh, that does not surprise me. I've had trouble doing some stuff even with UAC disabled, so there must still be active security measures in Vista even when you "cripple" it (IMO).....

    :)

I can't believe this thread has gone 3 pages without mention of Vista's Snipping tool. It's a vast advantage over prtscn copying to the clipboard, because you can save the image as a graphic file, and you can "take shots" of selected areas, rather than the whole screen or just the active window.

Edit: Good one, J-Dogg!, I think we were thinking alike on this one.

R4000 if your computer is like mine you have to hit the function key to get to the PrtSc key (on my laptop the function key is purple next to the ctrl key and says fn) so hold down the function key then hit the PrtSc key open paint and then press ctrl+v hopefully this helps!

works great you dont even have to open a program to paste it it has an option right after you select what you want to save it so much easier than alt printscreen i used that on xp
