With XP, I didn't need to do anything with explorer to make it remember how I wanted to see the items within each folder. For instance, in My Documents, it was View>Details, Sort>By name; in My Pictures, it was View>Thumbnails, Sort>Date Modified. In Vista, I have to manually add the fields (Details) I want to see displayed, and I always have to choose how I want the items sorted, it's very annoying.

Is there a way to make Vista remember which fields (details) should be displayed and how for each specific folder?

Same, my question is similar but maybe different. The one that annoys me is the columns are usually too small to show me the entire title of a file (mostly in my music folders) so I can right clock and hit "size to fit" or something along those lines and the column becomes big enough to show me the largest title on screen.

But close the folder and come back and you have to do it again.

As for sorting I always have preferred sorty by "type" and strangely enough that option is not a default option in Vista and you have to add it.

    In Explorer, try:

Organize > Folder and Search Options > "View" tab > Advanced settings: Remember each folder's view settings

Not the case for me I already have that enabled, but your suggestion did lead me to where I enable seeing file type extensions which I have been meaning to turn on for awhile, when you have multiple files with the same name and different types it comes in handy to see what it is.

It works but after a few days, the settings seem to roll back to the default.

Have you increased Folder View Cache Memory?

And you have to close the window when you make your changes to the Windows Explorer window to save the folder view settings for just that one window as Vista will only remember the way it is when you last closed the window.

The problem is that the View settings are reset everytime the laptop is shut down. Is there an application that can solve this issue?

    This is what I did:

    1) Reset the folder view setting manually by following the Method TWO (the link above)
    2) Increase folder view cache memory to 50000 (5000 is the default number)
    3) Close regedit and restart
    4) Make changes to the Windows Explorer window (follow the Wrapping it Up carefully)
    6) After that I backup both the Bags & BagMRU keys, so if Vista forgets my folder view setting again, I won't need to repeat the steps.

    Good Luck ;)
