How do MSDN/Visual Studio Subscriptions copies of Office work?

It seems something has changed in the past few years and you can't download an exe through the subscriber portal anymore, so I'm wondering if it's possible to install just Visio 2016 alongside my existing Office 365 suite without having it replace the entire suite with Office 2016.

That is entirely possible as far as the Microsoft Imagine (seriously MS, stop renaming the dame thing, it was MSDN for students, Dreamspark and so on) program goes, vision can be installed separately from the rest of Office in the sense that you can install it with a different subscription. Heck, I can log in to Office I downloaded through the student program with my regular MS account rather than the one tied to my university e-mail. I should note that all the Office programs I use are on the latest version.

There seems to be a bit of leeway where that is concerned.

If you meant installing with a different version of Office, rather than with different subscriptions accounts, then I do not know for sure. Visio 2013 can coexist with Word, Excel, Powerpoint 2016, but I have not tried the reverse.
