what can i do about this? I don't want it there. it just randomly appeared and idk what i did to make it appear. I didn't change any settings or anything. was there some sort of update? It only appears when i try to maximize (or use the middle button at all, for that matter)

Maybe try your mouse properties. Make sure your middle button isnt used for anything other than scrolling. Or whatever else you set it for.

I'd also go for mouse settings.
But I'd rather say touchpad - rather than "Physical mouse".
Look around under Control Panel -> "Hardware and Sound" - and find the mouse there. -
Also, right click on the Synaptics Touchpad Driver icon in the system tray. It may be something to do with your Synaptics driver.

I always have, Dave hasn't...
But if he has that's easier than my way(which gets you to the same place)

What happens when you click on it, and also when you right-click on it? Does it give you menu options of any sort? (like Delete or Properties) Can you drag and drop it? if so, even if you can't (for the time being) get rid of it, you might be able to drag it to some unobtrusive place on your screen.
