CAST YOUR VOTE: New Forum Topic: Organization and Productivity

    -----------

I am so glad I discovered virtual desktops and hope everyone else discovers them as well. I am a productivity nut and need to be as organized as possible because I am naturally unorganized. I want to share my setup and ask that everyone shares there own.

I have set up my desktop in a flow from most to least important
    My Desktops (Name>Use>Picture Description):
    1)GTD
    -"Getting Things Done" activities
    -Picture of GTD flow chart

    2)Business
    -Business start up activities
-Picture of my business card design

    3)Personal
-Social and development activities eg: facebook, personal emails, health etc.
-Dealing with a broken LCD on my old computer was pretty personal

    4)Market Place
-Any type of online purchasing is conducted here
    -"Bull Market" stutue

    5)Media
    -Downloading and Multimedia
    -Sarah Silverman is Magic

    6)Pleasure
-Anything that doesn't matter if it is accomplished or not
-Jessica Alba knee high in water (although this would in fact matter i it was accomplished)

Please share your virtual desktop setup and let me know what you think of mine.

I don’t have any icons on my desktop, I like to keep it clean (Sometimes, but very rarely I use it as a temporary place to extract or save files, but everything will be deleted as soon as I’m done; thats about all I use it for). I used to organize my start menu (put everything under separate folders and sub folders) when I was using XP, but not anymore; now I use the the recently used programs list (Almost all my frequently used programs are on the start menu when using small icons) or the start menu search function (type the first few letters of the program) to find the rest .

Other than that I use normal folders to organize my files and google bookmarks with labels for web URLs, therefore I don’t see much of a point in having multiple desktops. Well.. that is just me. I guess every person has their own way of organizing stuff.

I've used them on occasion, but only for when I need lots of space to open lots of files, usually for programming. I have no set layout of what goes on which desktop.

Overall I probably use them about 2.5% of the time, and even that may be an overestimate.

edit: Just use the taskbar to switch between them when I do use them - don't see any particular benefit to 3D. Especially since 99% of the time I use them it's with a virtual video card.

I have one flat desktop, lots of folders.. not enough RAM, crappy video processor as it is.. though I can use CubeDesktop, I find it too amusing and distracting to work in. I was playing with 3DNA for the same kind of reason.

Virtual Desktops are alternate workspaces where you can have different windows open without filling up the taskbar. It's great for people like me who have a full taskbar just doing casual work.

I am starting to agree with everyone that says these things. The novelty is starting to wear off especially when it takes two or three times as long to open a program because the system is bogged down. Although I don't use the Cube anymore, I do like the carousel feature.

With that being said, I am probably going to try and find a "flat" virtual desktop program but will still use the desktops for grouping my work together.

For XP there's this PowerToy called "Virtual Desktop Manager" and also if you have a NVIDIA GPU and a video driver that has nView installed you can use the desktop change there. It doesn't have cube but you can change between few desktop "pages".

Are all you guys are running fancy desktop managers? A lot of you guys have desktops with no icons too. Here's my typical workspace setup:
