I have Windows 7 and I can't find an option in disk management that allows me to format a ntfs extended partition. It only does primary and that's not what I want.

Do you have a logical partition inside your extended partition?

No. I need to create an extended partition first before I can add logical partitions inside of that. It's unallocated atm.
I just tried Gparted off of a Linux LiveCD. Extended and Logical is grayed out. I only have 3 primaries + 1 unallocated. I don't understand, I haven't exceeded the 4 primary limitation.
Edit: I found what the problem was. This "MediaDirect" partition that came with my Dell laptop is already extended. Only one extended partition can be created per disk, (Disk management doesn't tell you if it's extended, primary, or logical). I'll see if I can grow the extended partition and insert logical partitions into it.
I've successfully expanded the extended partition without trouble. Now I cannot add a ntfs logical partition!? I get error messages in both Gparted and Disk Management. What must I do? Screenshot of Gparted attached below.
Edit2: solved it! I had to check "round to cylinders" in Gparted otherwise it would fail.Attached Files:

Seeing as this is a Windows 7 question, I am moving it to that subforum.
How do you create an extended ntfs partition?
