I want to install windows 7 through my external hard drive, a clean install but it says i need to format it first. I have some files that i have backed up so i can't format it, is there a way to make 2 different partitions temporarily, one to install windows 7 with?

If you don't want to completely format it first, you'll need a utility like GParted. Just download a linux LiveCD and boot up with it.

From there, start GParted and use it to create a second partition.

    Just a side note...

When you partition a drive there is always a risk it can go wrong and you have to format all of it - yes, it shouldn't happen, but the risk is there.

During one recovery of C my D drive was wiped out... shouldn't have happened, it did - this is why I always recommend to have an external backup.

So maybe burn your files to CDs/DVDs first - just to be safe.

Thats the problem, i don't have any cds/dvds. I was looking around the house and i found my Mp3 player which, for some reason can be used as a FAT32 bootable system. I might use that instead.
