Just wondering what people use and why they use it. I know there are some better programs, but is there a best or does it not really matter (preferably free too)? I use:

Monitoring temps/battery: HWMonitor and RealTemp (to double check)
CPU: Stress Prime 2004 Orthos Edition (SMP Version) for stability/temperature testing, wPrime for benchmarking, CPU-Z for specs
GPU: Furmark (OpenGL)/ OCCT (Direct3D) for stability/temperature testing, GPU-Z for specs
Memory: Memtest (Windows based) for stability, CPU-Z for specs
HDD: HDTune and CrystalDiskMark for benchmarking

Don't really know what a good GPU benchmarking program is, so I just use 3DMark06, though I'm not a fan due to it's huge size.

    Monitoring temps/battery: Speedfan, Rmclock

    CPU: ORTHOS, CPU-Z, intelburntest.

I like ORTHOS because it gives errors in real time, so you dont have to wait for it to finish. Then I use intelburntest to finish up, since it does a better job.

GPU: 3dmark05, I agree that the file size is too big.

Memory:ORTHOS on the blend setting. CPUZ. Sometimes toshiba boot diag.

    HDD: CrystalDiskMark.

CrystalDiskMark an Atto for SSD, used that chess testing thing from the HW forum for CPU, RAM none, HWMonitor and GPU-Z for monitoring, GPU-Z, CPU-Z, and Speccy for information. And Crysis for GPU testing xd

why test and for what reason?

My 'test' is to use the heck out of it 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week, carry it around in a too small bag stuffed with too many things, knocking it around in the back of a car, etc, etc.

Once you've bought your machine, what's the point of cpuz and gpuz? It's not like little wood nymphs come in the night to swap out your cpu and gpu.....

It's more for when you first get your notebook (and/or desktop), and whenever you want to make changes such as cleaning the vents, applying new thermal paste, or overclocking. You want to know if it's stable and what is the difference between what you had before and what you will have after.

I use Everest Ultimate for everything. Only because I mainly watch the overclocking temps and the occasional stress test.
