How do you turn off laptop monitor manually in XP and Vista, while keeping other programs running? I know I can set up the timer in Power Option but I prefer to do it manually.

    Try Fn + F7 for your SZ381P.

On my laptop it's fn+F7. Otherwise, you can go into the control panel and turn brightness all the way down which turns off the backlight. You'll still be able to see a faint image on your screen, but the backlight will be off.

Download nircmd, it is a small free executable that will let you control many functions of your computer including turning off the monitor. Just type nircmd.exe monitor off. I use it to control the PC from a remote.

Fn F7 doesn't do a thing for me since I will have to have an external monitor connected in order to turn the laptop monitor off and I want to turn off the monitor completely, not just dimming them.

Why not just close your laptop when you hook up the external screen, that'll definetly switch off your screen

According to the Sony User Guide, Fn + F7 is the closing thing to it. If that doesn't work, maybe you'll have to try PhoenixFx's method.

I am not sure that it is good idea. It may cause overheating because the heat from both the motherboard and the monitor will be trapped. Besides, I prefer to turn on the monitor back by simply swiping my fingers on the touchpad rather than opening the monitor.

Did you try nircmd ? Its a simple exe, nothing to install or anything.. And I can personally guarantee that it is not a malicious program (if that is what you are worried about). It works on external monitors too, I use it to turn off my external monitor.

Try pressing FN + 4 or which ever the switch screen hotkey is on.

1st press should switch to the external monitor only
2nd press should switch to dual screen/extended desktop
3rd press should bring it back to the notebook screen only

Thanks for the tip. It works. :)

There is only one minor problem in which when I turn the monitor back on, it sets-up the monitor to full brightness. I have to permanently change the default brightness in Power Option in order to make it permanent.

So in your laptop, pressing Fn+F8 will turn off the laptop monitor, eventhough you don't have an external monitor connected to your laptop? And which laptop is that?

Why don't you post your laptop model or check the manual yourself? Because every brand/model is different. Just because someone's is Fn+F8 doesn't mean yours is the same. Mine is Fn+F2 for example.

    My ACER combo - Fn+F6
    My ASUS combo - Fn+F7

And no, I don't have external monitor connected and it's working on both laptops.

I use Monitoroff. It's a simple program that does nothing except turn your monitor off when executed (and closes normally when awakened).
