I have an Asus A8JM T2400 @ 1.83 GHz. How come it says that my computer is running at 998 MHz though when I look in Notebook Hardware Control? How can I increase my cpu speed because 998 MHz is slow and considering that its capacity is 1.83 GHz I'd like it to run somewhere close to that. Thanks

Some laptops underclock the cpu when running on battery to save power, do you have it plugged in

Download latest CPU-z if your using vista.

The CPU will downclock its self when you're not much of it...as soon as you start doing CPU intensive tasks the CPU will automatically increase its clock speed to 1.8Ghz. Its called Speedstep

It's called speed step, the CPU will only perform at full capacity when it's doing something like playing video games or encoding video. You don't need it running at full speed when working on a word document or using the web.
How increase CPU Clock?
