Has anyone installed IE7 for windows xp home edition with SP2? Microsfot automatic updates is nugging me to update from IE6 to IE7. I read several reviews on CNET that IE7 is not all that good. In fact firefox version 2 rules.

I installed it and it's really bad. I still use firefox.

The interface is trying to be user friendly, but fails horribly because everything is backawards and out of proportion

Blows Firefox out of the water espescially UI-wise, except for the ACID tests ofcourse. IE7 is amazing IE7+ is just dope.

IE7 improves over IE6 greatly, but lags behind Firefox. There is no point using except for Windows Update. And in my opinion, I like the IE6 UI more than this 'slick' IE7 UI but thats personal preference

    It's not bad.
I wouldn't base my opinion on reviews (like the CNET one - It's very bias).

I think Microsoft did a pretty good job with IE7. I think it's a lot better than IE6.

Yeah.. the CNET review was VERY biased. From what I've seen and heard, IE7 is pretty good... but feature-wise, is still not as good as FireFox 2.0

Firefox 2 is actually playing catch-up with IE7 in terms of features. However, if you use lots of extensions to add features, Firefox 2 is definitely better.

If you only plan to use "out of the box" features, IE7 is the way to go.

I actually use IE7 most of time for regular browsing & fav website.
It's just cleaner and simple. It might be 1 second slower than firefox and locating a site, but that doesn't really bother me when it still feels instant. Cookie handling is also the best on IE7, I always "prompt site cookies"
and "Block thrid party cookies". I think FF has a extension to do the same, but I don't what so many add-ons just for simple browsing.

I use FF2 sometimes manily because of the extensions/addons. I like being able to download youtube vids, flash, etc etc: without a standalone app.
FF has much better themes and much more support than IE.

    ^^^based on Win XP^^^^

It's might just be me but, I think IE7 is the BEST browser on VISTA, and FIREFOX is the BEST browser on LINUX OS's

IE7 speed beats FF2 in Vista. I tried IE6 in Linux....What a huge mistake LOL
FF is SUPERFAST (faster than FF in Windows) in linux. The fastest I have experienced is FF in Linux.

IE7 will preform better under Vista and FF still reins under Linux.

So I think the OS has a big part to play in this comparison.

IE7 is able to open just about all of the web pages on the net which is something FF is not able to do. I don't really mind using both. both are really very good. what do those acid tests mean anyway? something with security perhaps?

I use IE7 most of the time, FF2 occasionally. Both are good and have their strengths and weaknesses. For a IE6 user it is a must. And if you hate its visual appearance, and would like good old IE6 style, do this little trick:

Go to C:\Windows\Ie7 and find iexplore.exe. Make a shortcut on your desktop. Start it. :) IE6 anyone? No tabs either! But it is an IE7 ofcourse.

    Cheers,

    Ivan

got a question about IE7 and didn't want to make a new topic about it so here goes:

I have 2 PCs, one pc has the tab bar after installation (tabs+ some icons):
whilst the other doesn't have it even on a fresh installation of IE7. How do I make it show up?

    thanks.

I hate to admit it, but I kinda like IE7.

I've been using Opera for the past few months, and liked the built-in RSS Support, but since upgrading to Vista (which automatically give you IE7), I'm liking it, including the built-in RSS feeds. I especially like that the RSS feeds are common to IE7 and Outlook2007 (add them in one place, see them in both), though the 'read' flag doesn't seem to carry over between apps.

One thing I don't like about IE7 is that you have to open a new Window (vs. a tab) if you open a website in a different security zone. I thought I did see an option to disable this, but I wanted to play with it with the default settings first for a while.

My mate mark asked me if he shpuld allow updates to give him IE7, i said no! Fear of the unknown I guess but I thought it might end up annoying him and I was probably right by what has been said!

Oh and I uninstalled firefox 2, still too buggy for my liking!

    How is FF2 buggy? :S

I can't stand the IE7 interface... it's just so clunky and bloated and theres no way to change it...
    It's got nothin' on firefox.

quite frankly it is awful. Its CPU and Memory usage is far greater than Firefox. It's a copy of other browers, and had nothing new in it. If Ie6 had tabs, I'd rather use that than 1e7...

The reason FF can't open all pages on the 'net is because of bad and lazy web developers. If a site can't be opened in Firefox, I'd seriously question it's security.

And the ACID tests are basically tests of how a browser renders(shows) a set of CSS markup as compared to how it's supposed to be rendered. Basically, it tests for standards compliance. IE7 sucks at this because it's still based majorly off the IE6 engine, with all the bugs and such included. Microsoft doesn't want to break pages that are built around the bugs in it's browser.

    I just found it annoying!

Then you're doing something wrong, or have something corrupt in your profile (using your old profile from FF1.5 with FF2? You might consider backing up your bookmarks and blowing away your profile). FF2 works fine with flash and java. Just tested them both. And I have comparable RAM usage in FF2 and in IE7 with the same sets of pages loaded in both browsers.

After first installing it I didn't like it very much however, I like it and it is better than IE6. It just takes a little time. It took me an hour. It's cleaner, simpler, more logical and easier to use. I've installed it on 1 desktop and 4 notebooks.

Getting used to the new interface didn't take me long at all. I also like the control you have over multiple tabs. But I have one big problem that has been brought up elsewhere: my IE7 has serious lag problems. It gets frustrating. Maybe it is taxing resources -- I'm not sure. Other weird things, such as all of my pages and even my email fonts suddenly looking bizarre. I just wonder WHY should this be? MS has clearly released yet another product before it's fully ready.

I would agree with the lag time.... I like the tabs but I have not figured out how to split the views between tabs.

So far I like and don't miss the ie6.

I'd do anything to avoid using IE7. It lags and I find the UI to be unfriendly and not very streamlined. It's probably the slowest browser I've used. They finally caught FF and Opera with their new tabs feature but it will be another long period of time before they can catch them in speed and functionality.
