I am installing Vista Ultimate and it has been sitting at the "Installing Updates" stage for over an hour. I'm not really seeing HDD activity nor is the DVD drive doing anything anymore. Not sure what is going on.

I don't know where you're seeing it (in Windows Update or installing updates from the web before first boot kinda thing), but I'd imagine it could take a while now. Especially if the image you have is Pre-SP1 and it wants to install SP1 as an update.

general rule is if your computer sits there for 15 to 20 mins and you can't do ANYTHING with it, just reboot it. One thing I have found Vista to hang on is network connection. Everyonce in a while it will hang for a few seconds trying to find my network printer. I have yet to find a solid solution to this.

Except when installing an OS or a Service Pack. I'd extend those numbers out to 45 minutes to an hour.

I agree with scuderia, SP1 can take up to an hour

I suggest unplugging all your external stuff and disabling your wireless/bt
