10-11 processes maximum. Don't know why other people have so many running. All around the forums people are like 40-60 processes.

Did you click "Show processes from all users" in task manager?

lol, a little different answer after you actually look, eh? ;)

I'm not running Vista so my answer is irrelevant, but it's 23 processes on XP here, 4 belonging to CCC/ATI driver.

40 procs running at startup on Vista, or 37 if you take out anti-virus, or 36 if you take out anti-virus and diskeeper defrag.

I have only 21 processes on XP including anti-virus and firewall.

    Edit: miscounted :)

About 71 with anti-virus, 58 without, and 21 in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Including System processes of course.

Thirteen of the 71 are svchost.exe's.

I know you can get it down to about upper 20s and lower 30s on Vista if you tweak services, disable defender, dont run AV, disable DWM (and its services). And also not running any manufacturer installed software, which is easier for desktops that laptops since many laptops require stuff for hot keys and what not.

About 51 at start up in Vista Home Premium.

This includes a few processes (I think two in total) needed for the biometric fingerprint scanner, 1 for the touchpad functions, theres also some running to do with my Nvidia 8600M GT think they are for Nvidia Control panel and stuff.

I also have 1 or 2 for the Dell Dock application. I don't use Vista sidebar though. I also have two for Bluetooth, one is just for the system tray icon.

A few of mine are ones that I use additional features for, don't really have any unecessary ones I can see at the moment. Need to go through my services though and when I install iTunes on this laptop it will add about 1 or 2 more.
