I have a retail copy of Office Home and Student 2007 with product key, that I have absolutely no use for. Is there any way I can check how many uses the key has left?

There is no way to know without trying to activate it. I know Office Professional 2007 has 3-5 before it sends you to a Microsoft Customer Service Rep who grills you on what you are doing with so many installations. If you successfully defend yourself (in other words, you are only trying to use the software on one computer and are reinstalling it), the rep will often renew the key for another set of uses.

3 uses I believe. Lol, sounds pretty tough to get more uses JEEz.

No way to know though? That's crummy. So much for resale...

Yes, I avoid it at most costs, though this came with a pre-owned laptop so I was hoping it would have resale value

generally you are not allowed by msft to resell keys apart from the hardware they were originally used on. This applies not just to the OS keys but applications and dev environments as well.

Well that's bad news for me. Though I have 2 things to say to that:
I sold it as "disc only" since I cannot guarantee the key's uses, and..
Since it is good for 3 uses, there isn't really an "originally used hardware".

I don't think individuals can re-sell media either.

    It's not a grey area.

I don't know that it's only 3 uses. All depends on the version. But yeah, if it came with your PC, it may not even work on a different PC.

    It was purchased OEM.
Either case, that blows since this software will go totally unused.

Just hope no one notices before the lawsuits begin.

It's 3 uses, then you have to call. It's really not that tough. I do activations all the time at work. Annoying? Yes but certainly not complicated.

Product Activation is kinda annoying, but it's here. I mean, there's not 50 ways for MS to know you're not using one key to install on 50 machines in your company without said program connecting to the internet to check in a database if the key is being used or not.

post your key and I will tell you (about three seconds after you post it, the answer to "How many keys/activations do I have left" will be 0).
