    Hi all,

How many programs do you have installed on your OS? I currently only have 15.

A lot of it depends on how you count. I voted based on the number at the bottom of my "Programs and Features" control panel window, which is 42. But... that includes a lot of crap, like multiple versions of Java, a bunch of crap bundled with Adobe Reader, a bunch of browser plugins....
Counting only the things that I would really consider separate programs, I have 20 installed... or 25 if you want to count each OpenOffice.org app separately.

But then there are also a couple things that aren't showing up in Programs and Features... like Cygwin and PowerShell... hmmm....

And I also have a few programs that don't get "installed", like CPU-Z and Process Explorer....

If you counted this way, then I think I will have to change my vote. :D

Agreed. A lot of programs show up multiple times - like Microsoft .NET Framework has a whole bunch of versions, and Battlefield 1942 shows up three times (two expansions + base). But then Civilization III, also with two expansions, shows up once. And CPU-z, indeed, not at all. Also depends on if you count stuff like Windows Installer. But it's probably greater than 50 no matter how you dice it for me.

Yeah, I'm strictly going by what's at the bottom of 'Programs and Features.'

By the way, I just saw Dark Knight and it was seriously one of the best movies I've ever seen. How is that related to anything, you ask? It's not. I just had to say it. :D

Definitely < 10...just got my notebook in June, so all I've got on it is Firefox 3, WoW, WinAmp and McAfee. This is somewhat of my mobile gaming computer. I use my old Inspiron 5150 (see avvy) for Torrent, Movie etc downloading. Like to keep my new one clean for best performance. I will probably only put <20 programs on it.

I hear you. I really don't think I'll ever have more than 30 programs installed on my system. I think with 15 that I have everything I need right now.

I got about 35 applications. About 5 of those are games. Another 5 are minor applications that tweak or provide extra functionality to programs I often use like inline search for IE7.

The key to keeping your computer running well is 1. Getting rid of apps that mess with your PC's performance, even when you dont want to run them(or by changing settings so that they dont) 2. Getting rid of apps that you dont use 3. Think about whether you need something before you install. A lot of people install something for one time use, then just leave it there and rack up 80+ apps installed.

I cant help having a lot of apps simply cos I play games and cos I use a lot of different apps for studies such as eviews, SPSS and some lesser known programs etc.

The red is the best suggestion. It's what has helped me keep the number of stuff installed down. I only have things on my system that I use pretty regularly.
