I just bought a nice laptop with 4GB ram and got a copy of Vista-Ultimate Upgrade from my school for $10. The problem is that it is a 32-bit version.

I tried to see if my product code would let me get the 64-bit version from Microsoft's Vista site and it wouldn't.

So is it worth it to buy the retail version of Vista for the 64-bit version? Could I buy one of these cheaper MVL versions for my laptop? What's the best way forward here?

64-bit? Depends what you do. If you require > 4 GB total memory, then it's worth it. Personally I wouldn't pay more for it than 32-bit.

So I should just stick with this 64-bit version instead of forking over $150 or more for the 64-bit Vista?

Umm... a single product key entitles you to both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions actually, but it may require a call to microsoft to get it dealt with.

You should be able to use the license for both. Look up ABR.

Not with this key as it is an upgrade key from my school. I think with their license I have to pay for both. I tried doing it through the Vista 64-bit website and it said I couldn't. If you have a number, I can try sweet talking 'em.
