I just bought a new HP Pavillion notebook. I did uninstall a few softwares that I figured were obvious junk but still have some more & don't know what I need & what I don't so was hoping to get some help with what is absolute rubbish. I did install a few of my own programs as well so ya.

Microsoft Works, some of the HP stuff (evaluate yourself before uninstalling), and Roxio. Whats Everest Ultimate Edition? Evaluate that too.

Honestly, the term "junk" is defined by you and no one else. Whatever you don't use is junk. If you use Roxio, obviously leave it installed, if not, uninstall it. Apply this logic to all software and your computer will stay clean...

Everest is a benchmarking application. Read more here.

Get a program called process explorer...it will tell you everything...you can right click and google any process and it will tell you what it does and if it's essential. It has a lot more advanced features as well and will help you speed up your machine.

In my opinion, Norton Internet Security 2007 is the biggest performance drag.

I'm keeping NIS 2007 for now cause with my XP machine I used to use AVG Antivirus + Comodo Personal Firewall & Comodo hasn't come up with a version for Vista yet & I do not want to stay without a firewall or keep experimenting with other programs. I don't like ZoneAlarm even. And, Roxio came pre-installed & I'm gonna leave that too cause I don't have any other option right now, any other software better or as good for burning CDs/DVDs? Nero?
HP stuff, I have no idea what I need & what I don't. I mean I can't even find where to run more than half of it
I had installed Everest myself. The thing is, I've got a 160GB hard drive in this laptop. 140GB is user available & when I received the machine I only had like 100GB free, so I mean where is all the free space going?

uninstalling the hp stuff can cause your computer to "not function properly"...such as if you have "quickplay"(the play, forward, reverse, volume up/down buttons above the keyboard) those buttons might not work..and it might even prevent your wireless card from connecting to a wireless connection.

That's not too bad. I would be more concern with Startup services. Especially with Roxio and HP extras.
