How often do you defragment your drive?
-
-
I usually do it once a week, or after I install/delete a large file or program.
-
im doing it right noW on my dream desktoppie with an ancient AMD Athlon Xp 1500+ (1.35GHz) Processor and 512MB of RAM and 256MB GeForce 6200 AGP 4X card.
now thats all i have until i recive my lappie next week!!!!! -
Diskkeeper smart scheduling, so almost daily.
This software is well worth the $ -
I usually check my drive once a week to see whether windows see it necessary to defragment my HD. if it's still ok, i'll just leave it.
-
I have less than 10% free disk space... And I'm always moving files between mine and my bf's laptop who has even less when "temp" folder goes in heavy use. So defragmentor doesn't like that. And even when I have 15% space available, the defragmenter leaves it mostly fragmented. Sigh.
I just have all this Mac stuff that I don't know what to do with, 15 GBs, and that's what's largely at fault. I'm thinking of buying a used old Mac just to see if it works, and then when I'm done, selling it (hopefully) for profit.

depends on how active my drive is..if im constantly downloading torrents, or installing things i will defrag daily..if weeks go by where the worst i have done is type a few things..then i let it slide..i try not to get it past 10% file fragmentation..if it does, then i defrag it right away..
pb,out. -
would anyone like to explain what defragging does and why you do it?
-
I dont defragment at all. Ive been a PC tech for a couple years and know the benefits but I tend to reformat every month or so to keep everything running smoothly instead.
-
I also use Diskeeper. Picked up the pay edition, and am happy with the speed and results. I set it to smart scheduling, but have been back and forth on that...not sure if I want to leave it like that forever. Right now I'm happy with the resource usage though.
-
I defrag about once a month. Helps a lot.

Reformat once a month?
Even with your files and drivers backed up that's a pretty big project to go through on a monthly basis. Reinstalling *everything* -
Metamorphical Good computer user
I reformat inbetween school quarters, so that's about every 11 to 12 week to make sure my laptop runs smooth and stable threw the new quarter. I'm bad about defragging. I next to never do it.

Hey, Merkaba,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defragmentation
Defragmentation:
In essence it keeps the files of programs more contiguous leading to better hard drive performance. -
-
so besides Diskeeper, are there any other free programs out there that defrag well? I have Perfect Disk a while back, but its no longer free. I'm just looking for one that is small and effecient, the only feature I need is a scheduler.
-
Every night with diskeeper pro
-
About once a week or whenever a large portion of my hard drive is changed.
-
Whenever screen saver comes on.Then its auto defrag with diskkeeper =p.Never have to worry about manual defragging again lol.
-
Anyone using mst defrag? Looks like it does the same thing as all the others...defrag in the background. Is it any good?
-
There should be an "other" option. I've had my notebook for almost 6 months and have only defragged twice.
-
I have 7 partitions and I defrag 2 of them twice a week and the other 5 twice a year (using the Windows utility).

Defraging every day? When defragmenter is operating, it uses the hard drive to the max... Does the benefit of quicker file access outweights the strain of heavy hard drive use caused by defraging?
To me, the balance between saving the drive from extra work and keeping the dirve defragmented, is defraging it approximately once a month. -
i dont believe in defragmenting =X i use to use diskkeeper 10 pro but it takes forever to defrag. when i leave it in set-n-forget mode it uses alot of resources.. so ehh i never defragged again.
-
Nearly everyday i guess, since it only take a minute or so, i also immediately defrag after removing large file, and after install/uninstalling new software
-
I try to do it every 3-4 weeks. Sometimes more frequently, sometimes not...
-
I defrag at least once a month or whenever needed. Exspecially whenever I download and delete alot of files.
-
I usually "clean my laptop" every 2 weeks or so. I defragment the drive, do a disk cleanup, clean up the registry and do a virus as well as a spyware scan.
I notice a significant increase in speed. -
Mine only needs defragmenting every three months or so, really.
-
my conscience is getting the better of me, i hardly defrag, maybe once every 6 months, i really dont notice the difference, and i heavily use my laptop everyday, downloading, games and work, you think i should do defragging more often?

I have my defrag on a automated schedule. My main c drive gets defragged once a week and my other 3 drives once a month. The c drive is really the only one that gets fragmented since it is used the most especially if you play games.
-
I run the defragmentation in C drive for twice per week, it helps the hd run faster and improve the speed. I also run the error checking once per week in case the Windows' system file is corrupt.
-
I defrag whenever I remember to.
-
Once every 6 months
-
I haven't defragged on my 710m yet - but I usually do it about once a month on my portable machine. The desktop is defragged automatically every week, but it's always on and always downloading files/accessing the hard drives so it needs it.
-
pretty much all the time. I like it clean
-
My older computers that use 70% + of the HD, I defrag 4 times a year.
But for this new Laptop, I'll only do it twice a year.
It mostly depends less on the time frame, and more on whether I do some major file deletions or large application Uninstalls, then I defrag.
Is there a trade off ... shorter HD life vs a one second gain in speed by defraging every week? I don't know. -
Wel, my MBP does not ever need to be defragged, but on my desktop I never do it. I see no speed increase before and after when I have done it. Defragmenting is one of those things that was more important with the older OS's. The modern ones don't really seem to gain much performance from it.
-
Is there something wrong with the windows default defragmentor? Or, why is it not as good.
-
But to answer the thread, I try to defrag once a month at least. -
I defragment my drive as soon as I analyze it and it says I should defragment my hard drive.
-
I set Diskeeper to automatically defragment my hard drive. Everything is automatic so I don't have anything to worry about. Except that if I shutdown the computer while it is still defragmenting I will get some error and I might have some file damage...not too sure about that though.
-
I do a disk cleanup, clear the prefetch, and defragment my I9300's internal hard drive at least once a day that it's turned on. The external, being FAT32 and ahving no system files, doesn't fragment as quickly, and gets it about once a week. My Compaq is done about two to three times a week.
So I'm a bit obsessive about getting every last ounce of performance, so sue me. -
I have Diskeeper Pro Premeire, Its great it automaticly smart defrags my hard drive when I am idle. It works amazingly great, Sure beats Windows defrager, you wouldnt believe how bad the Windows standard defragger is. I ran a test defrag with windows defrag, then analyzed with diskeeper, You wouldnt even know I ran the windows one. Hope this helps
-
I should be more on top of it (I used to be) but now I never defrag. The total fragmentation hovers around 4%...maybe Vista is doing a good job of managing the files?
-
I defragment all the time, and it usually only takes about 10 minutes and it is done. It's what you get when you remain on top of things
