I defrag my N100 with diskeeper Pro, once a week, on Saturdays. For the desktop, I leave diskeeper on auto defrag and it defrags if required without my intervention. I prefer to keep the drives on my desktop (especially the P2P drive) defragged, otherwise it can slow down things quite a bit.

I never defrag my drive. I use Linux, and so does Bill Gates.
-
What about external HD drives? Anybody feel the need to defrag those?

If you have indexing on you should fragment once a week, with it off the drive doesnt get fragmented hardly at all unless you do alot of install/uninstalling.
-
Usually I defrag once a month,except if I install/uninstall sth really big.
-
How long does it take you to defrag? Sucks that it doesn't even tell you any %, I had it running for about 4 or 5 hours but it still didn't finish.
-
My laptop takes about 5-10 mins or less to defrag with Diskeeper pro every weekend. For the desktop, its on the automatic mode, so it doesnt matter really- the defrag works during system idle.
-
I defragment less than once a month. That wasn't an option though.

im defraggn now.this is a new notebook and its been running for around 2 hours now with a 120 gb hdd.is it supposed to take this long?to bad you cant even see the progress.
looks like ill have to get the diskeeper then -
Yeah, it will take a while. Vista defrags in the background while the machine is idle, so if you just forget about it and let it do it's thing, the disk should stay pretty clean. Save your money and just let Vista do it's job.

Normally once a week...

Use contig with Power Defragmenter GUI 2.0.125. Free and all you need.
-
Not very often. I don't boot into Windows that much though.
-
I'm a bit concerned about my C drive because I'm defraging it 2 or 3 times a week. It seems like every time I analyze the hard drive it says to defragment, does this mean my hard drives dieing?
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Somewhere between once a month and... never. But since it's closer to once a month, I put a vote for once a month.

Your software has a vested interest in telling you "You need to defrag now!" otherwise the next time, you won't buy it. The reality is, fragmentation is hardly a problem anymore.
My advice is to forget about defragging, and use that time to do something fun or something productive. -
Once a week using Diskeeper and Auslogic Disk Defrag. This is probably too much but eh, what the hell, it's fun.
I promise I'll cut it down.
How often do you defragment your drive?
