Nothing should happen. it's keeping you from making a huge mistake! ...big ol' grin...

You REALLY don't want to install WindowsME. Win98 or Win2000 would be MUCH better choices. ME is has all sorts of issues. Do you have a particular reason why you NEED WinME???

I think Windows 98 or 2000 will be best for your computer if its got 256MB RAM.

You need to set the bios boot order to cd-rom first, then hard drive.

Otherwise you computer will keep reading from the hd first instead of from the cd-rom where the OS cd is in.

As long as you're not doing anything really intensive XP should be fine. I've got XP on 400MHz/256MB and for general day to day use there isn't a problem.

Avoid Windows ME (I had my share of bad experiences with it).. As everyone else suggested, I would go with 98 or 2000.

For not much more you can get a brand new computer. Or see if you can pick up Windows 98 on Ebay. Just remember you'll need to change the BIOS to boot from your CD drive.

All of this begs the question, why are you trying to change the OS in the first place? All of this advice about you need this, you need that is ignoring the two questions that need to be asked FIRST. Why are you changing OS in the first place? What is it your mom needs to do with the machine? Win98 with the service packs MIGHT do just fine. Although I belive it is off "life support" at Microsoft, so any new vulnerabilities may be unpatched. But depending on your Mom's needs that may not be an issue at all.

He was using Windows Millennium Edition, screwed up and can't re-install, because the CD isn't booting. Then it was mentioned that ME sucks, which it really does.

I suspect you are right, but he never explicitly said that, which is why I asked. And the really important question is what does his mom do with the machine? If she does not connect to the internet, an old copy of Win98 may be just the ticket. (If she DOES connect to the internet, the lack of vulnerability patches for Win98 might be problematic.)
