I have Windows XP pro on my new computer and I use classic logon/off, i.e. when clicking start button and 'shutdown', you get the drop box with options of shutdown / install updates and shut down /Restart / log off / standby / hibernates . The default is somehow always the "install updates and shut down". I don't get this option on my other PC. How can I get rid of it?
-
did you actually choose that option? it should disappear once the updates are installed
Otherwise, the next time you are in Windows, run windows update and install them. -
You must have an update that was downloaded but not yet installed - if you've never selected the option in question. If you have selected that option but still keep getting it at every shutdown, you might have some novel form of malware, in which case a thorough system scan is in order.

Do you see a yellow shield icon on your taskbar? If yes, that's the reminder for Windows Update. Open it and see the status, there must be some updates that need to be installed.

Er..Windows update is doing its update to annoy the hell out of you until you update? Isn't that a good thing?
-
Yeah, now I can confirm you all are right! I installed the updates, and now when I wanted to shutdown/restart, the drop box no longer has that "install..." option!
Thanks everyone! Will see if it comes back...
Funny thing is I never had that option on my other computer, whereas the computer at work always has that as default even if I had chosen it previously. -
on the work machine, it may need an admin to allow them to install, they may not have pushed it through an SMS server so no elevated privileges to install. -
I have a business copy of office for our business and I have the same problem. It wont install the updates.
How to get rid of "install updates and shut down"?
