I have Windows XP pro on my new computer and I use classic logon/off, i.e. when clicking start button and 'shutdown', you get the drop box with options of shutdown / install updates and shut down /Restart / log off / standby / hibernates . The default is somehow always the "install updates and shut down". I don't get this option on my other PC. How can I get rid of it?

did you actually choose that option? it should disappear once the updates are installed
Otherwise, the next time you are in Windows, run windows update and install them.

You must have an update that was downloaded but not yet installed - if you've never selected the option in question. If you have selected that option but still keep getting it at every shutdown, you might have some novel form of malware, in which case a thorough system scan is in order.

Do you see a yellow shield icon on your taskbar? If yes, that's the reminder for Windows Update. Open it and see the status, there must be some updates that need to be installed.

For this new computer (just delivered yesterday), I had never selected that option. Not likely to have malware for a brand new computer, is it? But, the computer I use at work, even if chose the option "install updates and shutdown", it will continue to have that as default the next time I shut it down, very annoying.

Yes, I see that yellow icon. I clicked it and now am installing the updates. Do you also mean once it's installed this option shouldn't be there any more?

It should only show up as an option if there are more updates that Windows has determined your system needs. Once all the updates are in, that option will be hidden until more updates are made available on the Windows Update site.

Yeah, now I can confirm you all are right! I installed the updates, and now when I wanted to shutdown/restart, the drop box no longer has that "install..." option! :) Thanks everyone! Will see if it comes back...

Funny thing is I never had that option on my other computer, whereas the computer at work always has that as default even if I had chosen it previously.

you may have them installing automatically on one machine.
on the work machine, it may need an admin to allow them to install, they may not have pushed it through an SMS server so no elevated privileges to install.
