My laptop has been going through repairs and a new Hard drive. I want to be able to turn on the laptop and go directly to my desktop page without have to click on my profile first. I am the only one using it -- for all intents and purposes I am the administrator. How do I do that? (I use XP SP2)
Also, I understand that I can speed up the log on process by eliminating or reducing slpash pages, like the Welcome screen.
I found this little site and I have eliminated the splash pages for a number of applications -- things move so much faster.
Also -- I know I have to do something to allow scritped windows for IE7 -- but I can't remember -- can anyone help me?

Click start, open run, and then type "control userpasswords2" without the quotes and then enter. You can play around with the settings there.

To expand a bit on what coolguy said:
Windows XP - solution 1:
- Select Run from the Start Menu, type:
control userpasswords2
...and click OK.
- Turn off the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" option, and click OK.
Windows XP - solution 2:
- If you have one user account and no password configured, Windows XP will log you in automatically. Otherwise, you'll have to do the following:
Obtain and install the Windows XP version of TweakUI ( http://www.annoyances.org/exec/software/xppowertoys)
- Open TweakUI (it's in Start -> Programs -> Powertoys for Windows XP).
- Expand the Logon branch, and click Autologon.
- Turn on the "Log on automatically at system startup" option, type your username and password, and click OK.
It's from the same site, Annoyances.org.
Good luck. -
This is kind of unrelated but i suggest you update to XP SP3 as it is out and available now.

Thanks everyone!
I will when I have time. I don't have time to troubleshoot any more problems right now -- and you never know what may happen..
Edit: It worked perfectly.
I just noticed I posted this in the Security sub-forum... Mods, I am sorry about this -- second time I made the mistake. -
No problem, moved to the regular Windows forum.

auto login may speed up boot time by reducing the need for user input, however I use minlogon, which is very effective, halves your boot time as well as speeds up overall performance.
How to log on directly to Desktop and avoid clicking user profile to get in?
