    Hi.

    I found the guide below.

    regards

    John.

    *******************************************************

ONLY USE IF YOU ARE ABLE TO RE-INSTALL VISA YOURSELF IF ANY PROBLEMS OCCUR.

When you install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 on your computer, the SP1 installer will not remove the older versions of Vista files from the hard drive. This is because the older files may be required in case you decide to uninstall SP1 later from the system.

Naturally, these files occupy important disk space. If you are satisfied with the performance of Windows Vista SP1 and are unlikely to remove it later, why not reclaim some disk space by removing all the older Vista files.

There are no manual steps involved. Just open your Windows command prompt and type vsp1cln.exe (short for Vista SP1 Cleaner). It takes less than a minute to execute.

*vsp1cln.exe is added to your Windows Vista System folder after you install Vista SP1.

    windows vista sp1 cleanup

This will make Windows Vista Service Pack 1 permanent on this computer. All the older files are deleted now and your hard disk has tons of extra space for other important files like videos and photos.

You computer need not be connected to the Internet for running the Vista SP1 cleaner tool. And you won’t be able to remove Windows Vista Service Pack 1 later.

That is not indicated just yet since there are still issues with SP1. You might need to roll up the SP1 in case of emergency.

I tried to instal sp1 and it totally screwed up my laptop. Stopped at 54% for hours so i reset. Then it went to 100% and said it still didnt install and it was reverting changes but got stuck at that screen for almost a day. Got round it by starting the computer in safe mode (although this took about 20 tries, not sure why it worked the 20th time but it did) and doing a system restore. Not installing sp1 after all that.

Since the Vista on my PC is one of those OEM copies, which I would never reinstall, and I have customized and cleaned it up substanially, I took no issue whatsoever with making SP1 permanent. The weekly full backup I make is sufficient for my purposes.

SP1 is best installied in a fresh clean system or an integrated install.

Existing bloated/unclean systems seems to cause more issues with it.

I actually started a similar thread before this. Link

Fair enough but then for me microsoft shouldnt be telling me its an important update that i need. If it needs to go on a fresh system or atleast a relatively clean one then they need to tell people.

Did you install through Windows Update or the SP1 Standalone installer?

Update. Popped up in the corner yesterday. I have Kapersky Anti virus and apparently that has been known to cause conflicts.

    I see.

I had more success installing with the SP1 standalone installer even though some of my drivers were known to conflict with SP1.

    SP1 can be tempermental.

No matter which SP, the standalone installer is always better and safer.

Pretty much irrelevant if you take a backup beforehand.

If you are pleased with Vista SP1 and would like to delete the old uninstallation files to save diskspace.....

then type the following command in DOS

    vsp1cln.exe

Saves lot of space! (Approximately 900 MB)

Yea, this is old news. Although you hint at it, you should explicitly state that you will NOT be able to uninstall SP1 after you do this; a clean install will be needed to get rid of it.

Yes...I merged the newest thread with an older one. There is no need to make multiple thread about the same thing.
