I've been using Windows since 3.11 (c. 1994) and I create/use shortcuts on a regular basis. A minor annoyance has always been that the word 'Shortcut' appears with the shortcut title. Needless to say, I was very happy when I ran across this registry tweak recently! =)

If you don't want your shortcuts to include the text "Shortcut" in the name, here's how to get rid of it permanently! (This will only apply to shortcuts you create after the tweak and not existing ones.)

This does require you to open the Registry Editor and make a change, so all of the requisite warnings apply. It's always a (very) good idea to backup your registry prior to making any change and it only takes a few seconds.

Here's how to get rid of the "Shortcut" text-

-Open the Run command by pressing Windows Key + R or by clicking 'Run' in the Start Menu (if you have the option).

    - Type ' regedit' in the Run prompt and click OK

    - Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

    - You should see a key in the right section of the window called ' link' - double click on it

    - It has a default value of 1e 00 00 00; Change the 1e to 00, making it 00 00 00 00, then click OK

    - Close the Registry Editor

    - Note that your shortcuts will continue to have an arrow on the file icon, so you can still easily distinguish a shortcut from an actual file.

    - If you ever need or want to reverse it, simply navigate to the same registry key and change the first '00' back to 1e.

I use a freeware program called Winaero Tweaker to accomplish the same thing. It can also do other stuff under the hood of Windows, including removing the shortcut arrow and a lot more.

I use Ultimate Windows Tweaker to remove shortcut and shorcut arrows and it works fine.

This is the first thing I do when I install Windows. I hate it how when I am on someone's PC, their desktop is filled with shortcuts that have the -Shortcut affix

I already posted this tweak long ago here:

Then why are you using someone else computer then. It's there computer they can do what they want to it and you have no say about it. Otherwise they will tell you to go home.
