Ok, I got my laptop (finally!) and just adore it. It's an HP DV2555nr (2000z, basically). It came pre-installed with Norton Anti-Virus 60 day trial. I 'stupidly' went ahead and started the trial knowing I will probably end up going with another Anti-Virus as all I've ever had was problems with Norton. So, my question is... how do I COMPLETELY remove Norton/Symantec from my laptop? I know it's going to involve editing the registry and such as Norton burry's itself way deep in to the system. I had that same experience with my desktop and that was 5+ years ago. UGH! Anyway, if anyone has the answer for me, please let me know. Much thanks ahead of time.

PS- I see that Symantec has a removal tool on their website, but I heard that it STILL doesn't get rid of everything....

Going to Control Panel should be able to get rid of the majority of the files, but sometimes the unistall option isn't there, and you may have to use the removal tool. I wouldn't worry too much about left over files, as they don't really do anything to harm the computer.

If you really do want to get rid of all the files, it would take a very long time, indeed. A better way to get rid of them, would simply be to format and install Windows again.

use it, but before doing anything:
. disable all related Norton services
. disable all related Norton start.up processes (cCleaner is a good tool for these)
. remove all norton apps from software
. delete all related Norton folders
    . cCleaner to scan/fix issues

u should be clean afterward - there r probably some left-over inside ur registry, but this should not be affecting ur "clean" system

    cheers ...

I know this program sounds awful, but give it a shot. You can select what things you want it to remove. HP-Dell have this annoying habit of pre-installing a whole bunch of usless stuff.

The Symnrt tool that Symantec has on its site works very well. After running it, a quick registry cleaning should take care of everything else. Also, go through and check for any left over directories. Then you should be good. I've never had any Norton problems after running Symnrt.

Very easy. I have the same model dv2000z series. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Remove Programs (Norton Antivirus and Symantec Live Update).

Then go to c:\Programs Files and delete Norton and Symantec directories. Reboot. I like Avast and it's free.
